How do you do research for logo design?

What questions do you ask?
How do you do research?
Do you use mindmapping?
Do you sketch before going to the computer?
I'm starting to realise that building the actual logos is just a case of having adequate drawing skills and being able to wield illustrator but the tough part is doing research to decide on what direction to go with.

For me, it all depends on whether the logo has distinct words that I could convert into images. For example if a company is called "Dog House" (A little too easy I know). Then as soon as I hear that I see a simple vector house in my mind with a cutout of a dogs face. So I guess what I'm trying to say is I just use my imagination the jump into illustrator/photoshop then get straight into it.
If it is a more complex design that comes to mind I sketch it out first then i'll scan it and use the pen tool to make the shapes.
It also would depend on if it was a professional or social company, for a lawyers firm I would probably steer clear of images and try and come up with a twist on typography.
Depends on the situation I'm in I suppose.
Hope this was the type of answer you were looking for.

Also, if you would like to know a great book on Logos, I'd have to recommend LogoDesignLove. It's awsome.

Say your making a logo for Banana Vans...
I would search BV logo.
Just to see what sort of ideas have been already done, you may see how different people link the letters etc.

Inspiration should come from learning about the company, its attitude, its personality, its aims and achievements - as stated above. I'd give image search a wide, wide berth until you've decided on a concept. By all means then use image search as a way to research execution of your concept.
