The majority of my personal sites and work is on Media Temple. I'd rate them as one of the best hosts I've ever used (and trust me, I've used a LOT over the years). They may be a little more pricey than other hosts but the customer service is excellent, all support tickets I've submitted have been answered within 30 mins and I've had no down time for the last 5 years.

DataFlame - I've had hardly any problems and the head office is within twenty miles so I can go and raise hell in person if I want!

It was top-rated about four or five years ago.
Last week it was showing a popup for open or save when you tried to open a .php file but not .html .shtml or .css and it was only for one of the domains I have hosted with them. I emailed and it was cured within an hour or so. I think the server must have been serving .php files as .pdf for some reason. Never happed before.

1&1. Fine for small personal sites, cheap too. But customer support sucks and if your site starts to get decent traffic it grinds to a halt. I was a satisfied customer, now I'm very unimpressed.

Moving to MT imminently.

Yes, I also keep hearing good things about media temple from web guys.

I think this is partly due to their good reliable service overall as well as their customer support.

Also, they have a very smart advertising campaign (nice 'mt' banner ads and such) which seems to have struck a cord with a lot of web designers.

I host my personal websites (nothing work related) on a blue-host VPS, great so far. I recently moves away from Fanatical VPS (who were also very very good) simply because I wished my websites to be in the UK rather than Germany.

Good quality hosting will set you back a bit more. If you look at the features of the Grid Service for example, you actually get a good amount for your money.

Currently using JustHost, previously used 123-reg, not a fan of either. Both have relatively poor customer service (most phone calls end with "please submit a ticket").

We seem to have server down-time now and then with JustHost, sometimes it's "scheduled maintenance" which they don't tell us about and all our clients sites go down.

We're probably going to look to switch soon, so I'll keep an eye on this thread!

EDIT: They're both quite cheap though. Go figure...

I'm hosted with NuBlue. Absolutely no problems at all with them, small knowledgeable support team who roll up their sleeves and wade into problems, even when it's something that's not strictly their responsibility. They're especially good at tuning for Magento.

I've also used MediaTemple for client projects, including one WordPress site that was linked to by David Thorne and spiked to over 100,000 uniques a day (which it handled without blinking).

The "its scheduled maintenance" for downtime is the excuse used by a lot of the mass-oversellers, despite the obvious requirements of something being scheduled and planned.

Wow - cheap hosting which built in regular downtime - who'd have thought ;)

5 Quid hosting work well for me. I particularly like the fact that PHPMyAdmin doesn't kick you out after 30 seconds of inactivity.

You can't go wrong with Heart Internet. Good prices and a very helpful and professional service. They also throw in a bunch of helpful tools for the novice!

We used Heart for a period of time but found our WP installs were running pretty slow, often taking many many seconds just to respond before even loading a shred of content. The issue was never resolved so we moved away from Heart.

Perhaps we were unlucky, I don't know?

What sort of package did you have with Heart? I've just signed up for a VPS with them.

Just the base VPS at the time, if I recall we only had five WP sites with them, no major traffic.

At the moment we're currently between two hosts with three packages, one tuned specifically to Magento and one a dbase VPS and 'frontend' VPS which appears to be working well but we still see some performance degradation at times.

I have offered to pay more to secure more of the VPS but they seem reluctant, I'm unsure as to why!

I'll be honest, we used a freelancer! I can run the business, I can do design, I can do html and css but when it comes to server side tweaking I'd rather pay someone know who's their stuff because it's critical it's done right.

If that's the case, you may want to give HeartINternet a think when it comes to VPS's. I'm sure I read here recently that their VPS packages are all totally unmanaged.

Another vote for 5quidhost - I've been using them for years. Downtime almost non-existent, support very helpful and quick to respond, and very good value for money. Much better than Heart when it comes to support in my (limited) experience.

I host my website on CityCM and use the VPS setup. Very impressed. Due to the hours I often work late at night, and when I've need support at 2:30AM they've replied.

http://www.citycm.co.uk/ - The guy that owns it is a member on here also. The servers are super fast and are in the UK, Manchester to be more specific. :)

We don't use Heart, we tested them last year.

We have dedicated servers now, running a number of virtuals.
