So I have been designing websites for a few years now. Though not very advanced websites I have created a fair few to get the hang of design and layout. I use basic HTML and make my website designs in Photoshop and use Dreamweaver for editing.

Now I want to take it to another level. I havn't really had much coding in my websites as they have been portfolio websites for small businesses. I would like to know where to start of and how you would create content rich and interactive websites and begin to code them personally. Currently I use freely available scripts for contact forms etc. When I mean content rich I refer to sites such as Twitter, Facebook etc. I have a idea which I would like to put in to play and from previous experience know that algorithms will be a must.

So any pointers to good resources or even which language/script to look in to. The journey will be long but one which I would love to do!

Thanks!

As far as building bigger more complex sites, I'd probably begin to look into learning one of the major web platforms and the language underneath them (wordpress, drupal, ruby).

But if you looking into creating a site which pulls in content from all over onto your site you're going to really need to start getting your head around RSS Feeds and APIs.

Funny you talk about pulling in content from other sites as thats the kind of road i'm looking to go down with my website. I do know that wordpress uses php as its platform so i'll certainly look in to that. Also found out Twitter is built using rubyonrails so there's another lead.

Time to get working!
