Hi Im new to the forums. Im very interested in getting some feedback for the main page of our future game site. Its still a work in progress and this design is for the Alpha release only so definitely not final stuff. We have been focusing more on the game mechanics then the front end design work. We went through a few different designs but we seem to be settling on this one.

Genuine truthful feedback appreciated. Dont care how harsh it it just be honest. I am new to this whole art form and Im trying to improve. Tips hints and suggestions are welcomed.

Also if you can view the site in chrome that would be best. We are having issues with it on IE and Firefox.

It looks very 'corporate', which is I'm guessing what you were aiming for based on the type of game. Still though, it looks quite boring to me... I'm not against the concept of the game, but the design wouldn't compel me to want to play it.

Also, I'd ditch the table based layout and use (or learn to use) CSS. Everything you've done there could be done in CSS, and would be semantically correct (leave the tables for actual tabular data, such as for the Nations statistics) and would probably load a bit quicker, too.

The whole design just leaves me a bit cold; it doesn't feel like it's for a game. I understand it's just an alpha build, but I'll still be honest, I don't really like it. It should still have an element of 'fun' in there, corporate or not.

Hope that didn't seem to harsh,

Good luck :)

Tom

Thanks for the response. Not harsh at all just what I wanted to hear.

We werent aiming for a corporate look but now that you mention it maybe it is a bit corporate.

We wanted it to be minimal simple clean and modern. Web 2.0ish I guess.

What colors should we use? I didnt want it to look kiddy or too many colors.

Although it may seem harsh, he's spot on. There's nothing "gamey" about it. Although it seems the aim of the game is to build a corporation, it's far too corporate looking.

The idea i'm getting just from the premise of the game is something along the lines of Sim City/Theme Park/Theme Hospital etc .. all of which are bright and bold. Try to incorporate something similar into your design. Ditch the dull colours and add some vibrant ones. Try a different style of layout, something which breaks from the blog-esque look you've got going on at the moment.

Get that right and you'll notice a vast improvement, which I think is the direction you want to go.
