Just wondering what I should be expecting as my salary if I was to look for a job as a PHP developer at the moment.

I have a BSc in Digital Media. 1 years experience as a web designer working with a company where I mainly did HTML/CSS and some Photoshop. For the past 3 years I've been lead PHP developer for a web start-up which I co-founded, my PHP skills started extremely basic, but I would now consider myself to be a pretty good PHP developer. I think I write pretty nice code. I use CodeIgniter as my framework of choice. I know a bit of JavaScript and ActionScript too. While running this start-up I've had lots of experience planning projects, managing people, managing myself and also coming up with ideas.

The startup has been well received but ultimately looks like it might not be a good business/career opportunity, so now I'm starting to think about other things - mainly I would like to know what I could expect as a salary - either in London or in Manchester.

For a rough guide have a look at something like http://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/ - you should find numbers for your area. Bear in mind these may be a little higher than what you'd see as a new employee.

I stated in my question "either in London or in Manchester". I'm currently based in Manchester.

Salaries in design/development start at more along the lines of 14/15k, definitely not 25k.

That's a starting salary though, I've been in the industry for quite a while now and was definitely expecting to be in or around the £30k mark if not more.

Incidentally, £14k starting salary sounds really low to me. When I was 21 (2007) I was earning €25k (~£20k) doing basic HTML/CSS and Photoshop for an irish company & my CSS knowledge was barely existent walking into that job and my design ability was fairly poor too (and continues to be). I know that was pre-recession Ireland, but still, salaries there haven't changed too much in web jobs.

BrightonMike's quite right really.
Not sure how many years ago that you're talking about but the industry has become very saturated right now and starting off you're unlikely to be earning more than £15k. To be in the £20k+ mark you need to have your foot in the door already and be good at what you're doing. Once you are then you have the opportunity to make the good money.

Look, when I was 20 I got a job as a Front End Developer doing HTML & CSS (on Magento and WordPress) and my salary was £25k

If you know your HTML & CSS properly, and on top of that a bit of PHP, javascript, you should start on 25k.

(This is in London by the way, outside of London the wages are usually a bit lower)

You struck the magic there with the sentence "If you know your HTML & CSS properly, and on top of that a bit of PHP, javascript" When i refer to the £15k worker, i'm referring to the starting and training worker.
