Hi everyone,
My client is asking me something that wasn't defined in the contract: a calculation of a number of days based on 2 date selections (start and end). For this I will have to implement some JS calendars. I have 2 questions :
1) Would you charge extra for this ?
2) If I choose to charge extra for it, should I make a new contract or just an extra invoice where only this feature appears ?

The original contract was signed by both parties to indicate an agreement on what work was to be done and what compensation was to be paid to you for work/time.
As this new work falls outside of the original contract you can look at two ways.
Either...
Tot up the amount of time taken to complete the new task and invoice/contract accordingly. Or if it'd take you a pathetically short amount of time where as to contract and invoice wouldn't be worth the pay then just chuck it in as a bonus for them.
I often do the later with quick half hour jobs as the time taken to draw up contracts/invoices for such minuscule things wouldn't be worth it. If it involves you having to do more than say half hours work and/or undoing work you may already have done then contract and invoice for this extra work.

Calculating the number of days between two dates is easy in any language, so wouldn't be a massive job (especially if you;ve written your system well).
For freelance stuff I have a minimum admin fee for any job. E.g. say I had to add in a date calculation it would maybe take 15 mins at the most (opening site, coding, checking it works, emailing back etc.). If it took any longer I'd just charge based on my hourly fee.
Not sure what benefit (or for what reason tbh) you'd get out of including such a small update in a contract though. I'd personally say a descriptive invoice would be fine E.g.
28/12/2011 Site Updates: Extra feature to display number of days between two selected dates on page xxx when user does xxx. Conformation email sent 00/00/0000. This invoice needs to be paid in full by 00/00/0000 otherwise I'll suspend your bloody site ( :) ) £25.00 +vat
I've started to include the date a customer said "go ahead" by email to avoid any confusion, as I sometimes get people disputing the extra work
