Hi again everyone,
A couple of days ago I posted asking for some honest feedback on a website I have recently made after some absence from web design: http://test.folkdirectory.co.uk
I have gone away and redesigned the site based on the feedback I received.
I'd again appreciate any criticism of the site and any ideas of how to make it better. Those that pointed out issues with the previous design, I'd like to know that I have ironed out the relevant issues.
Thanks very much,
Glen

I'm really sorry to be harsh on christmas day and all, but I really don't like it. The logo isn't good (i like the concept-it just needs tweaking) the drop shadow is much too big. The colour scheme doesn't really work, and the menu is horrible, I really don't like the logo in the middle of the nav. Hope you take this as constructive critisim as I don't mean to be mean.
Plus there is a problem at the bottom of the page, i've attached a screenie for you.

I think it's a vast improvement on the last one but still has some way to go.
First off I'd drop the logo from being centred within the navigation. It's not brilliant for usability and looks cluttered.
I'd stick with the colour scheme you've chosen.
Fact of the matter is designing for 'folk' will never be easy due to the fact it's a ye olde style bought smack bang in to the modern era.
See if you possibly lay your hands on some folk a rt to liven up the immediate background.

Your site looks like a site from the 90's, look around the internet, check out the new design trends. Compare your designs with others, that's how you will build you own point of view about the modern web, and you will start building better sites. Good luck

I don't agree with this. Yes, your site could do with improvement, but looking around the web at trends isn't going to provide you with the skills to make your website better. Instead, start reading up on the principles of design. Concentrate on things like designing to a grid, typography, colour theory and so on. A small amount of knowledge in these areas goes a very long way, and will serve you for every site you make from now on.
Best of luck

Thanks notbanksy. I did look around at other websites, but it wasn't that helpful. While I found lots of amazing CSS designs and great sites, most of the flashy things on the web today aren't really suited to my purpose/audience. I think I will take your advice and get a book on designing aimed at non-designers like myself. In the meantime I will take everyones comments on board, rehash the website one more time and see how I go.
Cheers all,
Glen
