Hey,
I have been working on this project for a couple of weeks now, and would really like some honest helpful feedback.

I am relatively inexperienced at design, so I will be sure to take on board all suggestions and consider suggested changes. Suggestions on both the design and functionality will be much appreciated.

The angle I am going for is a simple easy to navigate site. There is not alot of content on the site at the moment, and it is not yet launched, so is hosted on a personal domain.

Here is a shortened URL: http://goo.gl/j20Iq

Thanks for your criticism.

George

Why do you use so big image? http://www.gwebb.org...s/mapbubble.png

Logo doesn't link to home page. Change Google Adsense style. Make links dark red. You need work more and read about web-design , usability and typography

To much Adsense http://www.gwebb.org/yp/sitemap.php

Fully agree.

google modern webdesign inspirations and try drawing a few ideas from that, this is out-dated, blend and sorta boring, this is a type of website I close when I see it.
I don't know where to look, what information is important etc.

the bubble out of the map is sorta overlaping the search bar, not enough to make it unfunctional but just enough to bother potential visitors.

the lower part is way to high and way too empty, fill it with content or stretch it.

the logo is okay the text next to it is not, try a different font.

A total redesign isn't an option at the moment, but that will be a more long term goal. But I will now change some of the smaller tweaks you have recommended.

I'm not sure why that image is so big actually, i thought i had resized it.
The Google adsense are just sample images, the only colour I could have them in, but I will choose the most appropriate on launch. They are the sizes that they are as they are the most effective according to the adsense documentation.

I will now move the bubble and make the footer smaller.

Thanks

I made this for you, done in 10min with photoshop, a design like this is fast simple and yet modern enough to attract the viewers attention.

in b4 red links are not visible, xD it was a rush design, had spare time and was bored, decided to do something good

I like the the yellow flowing around the logo in the header and also the subheading looks good, but maybe not putting the featured pubs in the footer... ill have a play around on photoshop with my current design and might make some small tweaks. Thanks for that though, very helpful. :).

Glad I could help mate.

yeah like I said rush job did not really give much thought to many things, so this is pretty much a compilation of ideas you might find helpful.

I like the idea, short and sweet is always good for me and it's very punchy - gets it done quick and entices another click but it looks like it could do with a nice stylesheet. The colours, line height,it all feels too cramped.

body { background: url(images/main-bg.jpg) repeat-x; font-family: 'Calibri'; font-size: 14pt; }

I see no background image (Chrome) and Calibri is not a default font so you'd need to use font-face or Cufon to make sure everyone sees it as intended. Add line-height:24px (play with that until it looks good).

Hope this helps...do I get a free beer now ;)

Ok, yeah, it does seem a little cramped when I step back at a bit (which is always a stuggle when you are involved in a design for so long). I'll have a little bit of a play around with the line height and see what i can get.
The background image is just the header background.

Yeah, if your ever having a drink in York, lol. Me and my mates are having a great time visiting every pub in York. (and there is a pub for every day of the year)

Visiting every pub in York, is this web design? If so, I want to design for Playboy ;)

The pints for the reviews which D.Schuster did is a must for me, half full for 4.5 etc. makes it more fun.

Thanks everyone for your input. :).
I have now changed parts of the design, and would love if you all could give me some feedback on the changes.

Newest design:Newest
Old design:Old

Changes:
-Line spacing to 24px
-Changed header and logo.
-Removed navigation buttons and replaced them with text links.
-Made the footer smaller
-Made the background of the external area grey

I'm not so sure about the yellow header and footer, anyone have any recommendations for a better colour?
Also considering making the new grey background less boring, maybe with a texture/pattern of some sort. Any suggestions on this would also be helpful.

Here's the new link again: Newest
