Hey Guys...

So, I'm finishing my first website ... I've already done some mockups in the past and so on, as well as some photoshop things...you know what i mean... all unprofessional, for training only...

Now I got a proposal to create a website for a Farm* and there it is...
Well, let me give a heads up, the farm is not the correct word... it's a place in the middle of the Atlantic Forest which has some several ecologic houses to rent...

http://sitiobia.uphe...obia/index.html

(the domain will be bought soon.. haha)

I built it with HTML5 Boilerplate...and css3

I'm kinda unsatisfied with the menu... first of all i think its too high, i guess i'll make it shorter... and the border corners, well, I wanted to give a more "not so formal" look to the menu... but those borders are probably going out...

if you guys have any suggestion how to make this look as comfortable and pleasing to the eyes as possible, please let me know...i was thinking in applying some textures(dont know where) to give it an earthy feel...the background was a green pattern but it wasn't nice so I changed it to brown...

*Farm - I'm not a native english speaker, and I searched everywhere for the translation of the word Sítio in Portuguese which literally means Site...How do you call a place that is not a farm(ie growing animals).... one dictionary told it was named Site after all, but i wasn't very sure... maybe if you could help me on that too?

thx :)

I'll start at the top.

The title of the webpage is boring and blend, seems like not too much thought has been brought into that, not forgetting the colour, I see you were trying to use a sort of EKO green but achieved something that is rudely called "baby **** green" it's a horrible colour to use in any design especially on brown.

The logo is missing.

The dynamic carousel at the top is alright, altho it moves a bit fast, I can imagine that if your client requires a dynamic carousel for a banner they will want to input a lot of information into that, the 4sec it's currently set to is not enough for visitors and you don't want them fighting with the timer and switching back and fourth just to see the information you want to present them with. I understand the cartoon images are there only because the plug in you downloaded already had them in there so it's a good way to show what it will do.

the menu is again "baby **** green" which as said before is a horrible colour to use in design as it invokes a weird feeling with the visitors and does not attract enough attention, I would suggest using a more natural shade of green as the background or better yet, a background of a lush green meadow the sky etc. or perhaps a crop field or anything that would tell the user right away that this is a "nature" website.
More info on colours here: http://www.visualexp.../cfaqPart5.html
the purple does not go well with this shade of green at all

the webpage background is a sort of victorian wallpaper texture far too elegant to be used for a farm website, I'd say something natural would look much better, or if you want to create a visual effect of depth the correct shades of green can help you achieve that with the combination of reddish(orangy) brown to attract attention, for instance the title of the webpage would be much more visible if it were a warm colour on a cold colour then the other way around.

all in all the design is nothing new, it's a basic "blog" design: Title, banner, menu, text, copy right.

always try to aspire for more, for better for something out of the box, ESPECIALLY if you're just starting out.

If that was the mindset of every web designer we would still be stuck with text websites now wouldn't we, one of the important things to keep in mind in this business is to try and think outside the box.

no need for "fancy" layouts a design can be simple light AND awesomelike.
