This follows on from the topic I started: http://www.webdesign...cklink-quality/

To help me give feedback to my SEO company I thought a poll might demonstrate the point.

So is this backlink of good quality:

Thanks

Sue

It's a very very very poor backlink - no doubt part of an automated link wheel they use.

Put them onto me - @roballport - would love to hear their excuses :)

Yer lol.

To illustrate the example of an SEO person or company who has no idea about backloinking I'll use an email as an example I've just received a minute ago. I get at least 5 or 6 of these each day.

It was from some called kevin@procher.info (send him/her an email to say how good at SEO they are) who is doing SEO (SEO used in the loosest sense here) for a site called paris-hotels-24.com . He/she is offering a link from switzerland-travel.net/Colorado-Springs-site-list22

to my site

My niche - Web Design/Development/Graphic Design
My PR - strong PR 4/5

Their niche: Some random site about travel in Switzerland - seems to be a spamming seo site though
Their PR - as expected - n/a

Now why on earth would I exchange links with a crap page,a directory page, a page that has 0 traffic, a page that has 0 authority in the search engines, a page that has absolutely bugger all to do with my niche. Worst thing of all - it's clearly a directory site meant for back linking only - which Google majorly devalues anyway.

I'm sure the owner of paris-hotels-24.com would be interested in seeing what a potential mess this SEO is making of their site

The value that a website gains through a backlink is divided my the number of outgoing links the site linking in has!

PR NA is basically nothing. Its less than PR0!

Basically that site has 12 outgoing links. So therefore the value your site gains through that backlink is 0 divided by 12!

Not exactly the best backlink. On top of this, your site will gain no traffic as the site is not relevant to yours!

I hope they give you your money back. Best of luck!

Yeah, that link is pretty poor. I wouldn't get too hung up on Page Rank though (Neil, I'm pretty sure you have an old definition of value there although I take your point.)

Sometimes link velocity can be enough to achieve some good results - although only likely to ever be a short term fix at best. Crappy links tend to work best when you already have some great links pointing towards your site.

(As a side note, I really don't advocate crappy links - its worth knowing that that they often can and do work in the short term)

Yeah I know that PageRank is not ever been that accurate, but the principle is still the same, and it doesn't take a genius to see that is a crappy backlink!
