Makes me think of computer game screens, I'd ditch the backgrounds for now while you work on the rest.
The navigation seems a bit bulky and doesn't feel right to me. Hope that's helpful.

I like the background on the 2nd one but not too sure about the blue along with it, maybe like WBC said, ditch the backgrounds for now.

Thanks lads. Yeah I dont think the chrome effect works on a whole bar and I will make the bar thinner :) Ive just brought "web designer" mag which came with 140 brushes which will help me create backgrounds and should be a good read too.

There really isn't much to comment on. You don't have a design until you have some real content in there. Figure out what you want to say, put the content in there and ask again. Once you have content hammered out the design should fall in place.

Thanks porkchops. I did it in photoshop but im more experienced doing it the other way so im going to create the website using DIVs/CSS as normal then create the certain element in photoshop and just add them as I got along

I'm really good with Photoshop and Illustrator but only ever design sites with code, because it is more reflective of how the site will work. Might be a good thing or a bad thing but it seems to work.

You have a long way to go, learn more about web site sizes.

Honeslty, that is a very good website, but i do agree with what WBC said, it does remind me quite a bit of a computer game screen.

I think that is because the navigation bar is a bit large height wise and i would also say to forget about the backgrounds. But if i had to choose, i would go with the second design

Thanks for the comments again. I am re-doing it the coded way now. Same layout but thin nav bar and a more of a simple background. Will leave the busy backgrounds for now.
