Hello WDF DUUUUDEEES *stonerface*

what's up?

So anyway I finished my "concept" for my portfolio here's the link http://bit.ly/vSkj8c

a few notes:

1) the site is unfinished:
- I will make the menu items a bit smaller and better.
- I will add a speech bubble to my pic to the left side where my newest tweet will be displayed.
- I need to make the copy right bar smaller and include text to it

2)only the home and window links work

3)the weather app is not finished....yet

4)the gallery will be a carousel with 0 background so the "wall" will be visible and thumbs on it will be in wooden frames......or white frames

5)known browser issues:
-Firefox, opera and IE will not spin the "useful links" icons like they should
-IE and opera won't read the transitions ergo no smooth transitions but quick jumpy transtions
-the clock will not work in IE and Opera

if anyone has any ideas on fixes or finds more bugs I will appreciate it and give out reputation ofc.

Thank you WDF

Don't do it think of something else, it looks to amateurish to be a portfolio. Remember a portfolio is designed to show off your work and entice prospective clients to hire you. This for me doesn't do that.

Sorry. I just don't think the whole welcome to my room thing will work.

If you do want to continue here are some thoughts.

1. Make everything a bit smaller. The clock, the menu, the footer.

2. When I make the browser window smaller the clock moves and covers some content.

3. Make the menu bar visible without clicking the menu button to make it drop down. I don't think naviagtion should be hidden.

4. make your logo more aligned with your content.

5. The font you have used for the "this is me" needs to be changed.

6. Make the twitter bird a little smaller.

These are just my thoughts take them with a pinch of salt if you like. I want be offended. Good luck and if you make this work well done.

Like I said this is only a concept it will have much more later, also I prefer clean minimalistic and yet awesome designs.

1)everything a bit smaller is too drastic for my taste.

2)tested it out on all resolutions, no problems.

3)Aaah, you only have to hover above it :) and I like it hidden saves space.... altho I might make the menu items smaller bring them down align them with the logo and use the upper menu for other items....I shall see about that one

5) comic sans is PRETTY DARN horrible ain't it.....that was only a "this is what it will say font"

6) NEIN MEIN PRECIOUS TWEETY!

Reps for you non the less.

1. Fair enough it was just my opinion. It is your site.

2. If I use my browser minimized with the clock over the menu button I can't click on the menu button.

3. Again, fair enough.

5. It was cool when I was 7

My suggestions

1) I like your menu style. But i guess it shouldn't scroll the entire page down.
I'd rather prefer it to show over the page.

2) The logo actually is way off the content, it'd be better to bring it in line with the content (your pic). and a little bit lower so that it doesn't get covered when the menu shows.

3) make the clock a bit smaller and below the menu button. It's be nice to keep the logo and the clock in the same line below the menu.

4) The useful links, don't work for me at all. When I hover over them they disappear for about 3 seconds. I am using chrome on windows 7 to view them.

5) The tweet about this bird should be roughly the same size as the icons on the left.

6) the text on the side of the pic, It's edges are all jagged and messed up for me.

7) There is too much space below the brown texture, I'd suggest reducing the space

Well those were my suggestions.

Thank you we share most of the same thought on the matter.
now for my commentary

1)That is a good idea and I have been thinking of that myself but I sorta like the effect of this, don't know I'll try the second option compare the results and choose the best one.

2)Hmm I see, a valid point ALTHO, there will be much more content later on so I intend to keep it there, as that is the only way to ensure the logo won't "jump" around on every page, I plan to make ease-in and ease-out effects for loading and leaving pages.

3)Yes again I fully agree, the clock does need to be smaller and different, I will redesign it and bring it in the same line as my logo.

4)This is where it gets strange, what should happen is they should rotate around their center for 360° on hover, are you sure you are using the newest chrome? (if you could help me figure out this issue that would be awesome!)

5) Hmm more content will go into the "floor" design and I want the tweet bird to be as visible as possible, don't worry it'll look good later.

6) I agree, that's just a test on where I plan to put the text.

7)Plan on it :)

Thank you for this well written and thought out critique I appreciate your input, +1 for you my good man.

Looks like a bebo profile. Change your pic.

Like the menu at the top though!

I originally planed to design this as a room and have 2 smaller clocks displaying the current time where I live and the time of the visitor, so that they would know when approximately to expect an answer.

been thinking of either re-designing it or scraping it tho.

Never used that site to be perfectly honest with you, I indent to, problem is I don't keep many pics of myself.

Well thank you, finally someone that likes the menu

I'm not particularly experienced, but I have a few suggestions which you may like to consider. But first the parts that I like:
- The background looks good
- You are trying to think outside of the box, even though I am not keen on the concept.

Suggestions:
- Make the navigation visible all of the time, as it may confuse or even frustrate some visitors (and they are potential clients)
- Lose the clock - people can see what the time is on their computer, and it looks a little bit tacky.
- Change the picture of yourself to something more professional.
- Don't have an arrow saying 'This is me', people can probable figure this out themselves.
- The fake wood effect on the footer doesn't look good.
- Make the footer smaller, there is no need for it to be massive and empty.
- Include alternative navigation in the footer.
- I don't think people need useful links to download different browsers on a web designers page.
- I'm not too keen on the lime green text, it hurts my eyes a little
- there is alot of space below the footer, i'm guessing this isn't intentional
- The concept of it being your room may stop you looking professional, and that's what you are after.

Overall nice ideas, and some good functionality on the site. But you must remember that you are trying to sell yourself as a professional designer, and must think about the site in the point of view of potential clients.

Wasn't trying to be too harsh, but sorry if I was,

George

I think it needs a lot of work but the idea is quite a nice one, it reminds me slightly of an unpolished UrbanRiver, the same sort of idea of the room...although one thing that bugs me about the layout though, why is the floor in the middle up the wall?

I'm looking forward to seeing this one develop if you decide to keep working on the idea :)

Haha would you look at that, what an interesting find.

you have just given me a new load of inspiration on what to include and fix on my website, this single link was more helpful than anything posted in this topic.

+1 well deserved

and yes I do plan on working on this and finishing it in Jan probably, who knows maybe even this year.

hmm yes the floor I actually had a briliant idea just today on how to fix that 2D feel of the site.

thank you again

The text also needs to be text and not an image. Looks far to pixelated!

Make everything a tad smaller it will look 10x better...

Do something about your pic, even if it another 'sketch' version does not look right.

I would have a look at some other portfolios online and get some tips.

i dont normally comment, but this one thing I just must.

The clock! Why? I have a clock on my pc, my wrist, my phone, my tv, my wall. What makes yours more relevant than those? Its useless and nowadays its not really anything even remotely cool or useful.

Just had to get that off my chest :)

Already got rid of it yesterday, just uploaded the design with some minor changes still working on the big stuff.
