Some of you saw my post in the general chat about setting up an SEO orientated forum, and I just wondered if people had any suggestions about hosting.

I have a few companies I use anyway, but I wanted to know if people had suggestions about hosting companies or run a hosting company themselves.

Hopefully I can get a list of suggestions and have a look into them :)

Hi Jason,

Yes, I've just read your post about the SEO forum; a good idea as I am unaware of anything currently like it, and I'm sure it would be valuable to many people. Let me know when it's up and running and I'll take a look.

In terms of hosting, I'm sure you're aware there are many companies offering hosting on this forum (including Jst Hosting), and there are a lot of decent reviews made by the members here. It's just a case of taking a look around and finding who's right for you. I suggest staying away from the 'Big Daddies' (namely 1&1) though. There are too many horror stories floating around you start to lose count.

Good luck with the forum - don't forget to drop me a link Posted Image

Although I haven't used them personally (yet) Hetzner have insane prices on dedicated servers, the reviews I have seen are very positive. It may be a good shout as I'm sure your also looking to keep costs down at the moment.

Try mine out if you like. Like I said, if I win the VPS you can have that for free too and just transfer over.

Hi Jason,

I'd happily throw our hat into the ring, as I have to admit SEO is one of the topics that keep me awake at least to the late hours reading and watching eagerly on YouTube... and I'm of no doubt I'll soon sign up :)

Hosting wise much as Jst, avoid the larger companies and perhaps angle at a host that offers the whole product range, from shared through to dedicated... nothing worse than finding a good provider and having to leave as they lack the services to grow with your needs.

All the best in the forum just the same :)

Hiya Jason

Out of interest, what would your SEO forum offer that the plethora of SEO forums currently dont?
Whats your angle on it and your target audience?

If your target audience is the UK, then clearly a UK host would be the only choice, given its an SEO forum..

A VPS would be worth avoiding unless its purely developmental, as you WILL find this to be far slower than properly run, non-oversold shared hosting. Never fails to amaze us that companies these days STILL selling VPS's from single disk servers, so its worth keeping in mind what you actually want from the hosting.

As said, going with a host who can cover your entire life-cycle is wiser, and best to keep yourself independant from anybody else's clutches so to speak, like somebody else giving you a bit of their spare space, otherwise you are then at that single persons mercy for support, which can be a bit unfair on both of you...

A new forum will only use a small amount of space/traffic anyway, so costs for decent hosting wont be high anyway, but well worth avoing anybody offering "unlimited" or the ridiculous amounts for peanuts..

Our new hosting plans are due for launch this month @ £2.50 per 250mb space and 2.5GB traffic a month, so it wont cost you a lot for decent hosting thats fast...

Look forward to hearing more mate :-)

I understand that there are many thousand of SEO forums currently littering the internet, and the SERPS for such search terms, much the same for web design. But there's only one or two that haven't succumbed to the devil that is xrumer or othr forms of forum spam blasting.

That's the first thing I want to ensure doesn't happen.

Secondly, it's going to be a small forum with only 4 or 5 different forum sections. Obviously, I can't control it should it get popular, but I feel that the way this forum is run and maintained, it gives off an excellent family and community feel. I want it to be a 'go-to' place for regular users who want advice on a project they're doing, or need SEO reviews of websites they've built.

But mainly, it's a little projkect that I'm interested in, and having snapped up www.seo-forums.co.uk, then I don't see why not haha.

That's a very good point, and by and large I would be inclined to agree. That's why, personally speaking, I thought long and hard about whether to be involved in the hosting side of thing's, especially when you are putting your own name on it - like I have - your reputation could be on the line.

Customer satisfaction is very important to me, and with the creation of Pure I was trying to think about some of my customers who don't really get the hosting game. It can be quite confusing. It was because of this and other factors that I felt I could offer a service that would be genuinely useful to my customers and others.

Also a good point, although it's worth noting that common sense needs to dictate here. Unlimited needs to be governed to some degree with a fair use strategy - although I do now believe the word 'unlimited' should be used with caution or even avoided altogether.

As for OP, that's a great url - still can't believe it was available, although I notice someone has parked www.seoforums.co.uk in the hope of bagging a sale!

It'll be a real shame if it's riddled with spam like the others. Hopefully having only a small amount of forums as you say will make it easier to manage. The last place anyone wants to go for advice is a site overwhelmed with spam so hopefully your forum can remain relevant and a good resource to users.
