I have a Magento eCommerce website setup and I have noticed something with the URLS.

If you go to this address:

http://www.ferretbeds.co.uk/ferret-beds/christmas-snuggle-sack-ferret-bed.html

And then this address:

http://www.ferretbeds.co.uk/christmas-snuggle-sack-ferret-bed.html

They are both the same page and content! usually if a user is browsing the website they would only be able to access the first URL type with the category in the URL. But I just generated a Google Sitemap using the Magento admin feature and it has added all the URL into the sitemap.xml file without the category in the URL like my secound example. Would this be classed as duplicate content and will this cause me problems?

Thanks

Yep, I experienced exactly the same myself and wondered exactly the same. I'm sure there's a way within the admin to fix this, but in the end I just installed a canonical URL plugin.

The duplicate content won;t cause major issues, but I think it's not amazing practice to have it.

You'll also no doubt have other version too:

E.g. /product/view/id/[ID], /product/view/id/[ID]/category/[cID] etc.
