If a website has new pages added on a daily basis (or even hourly)
is it better to wait for the regular crawling by the Googlebot or
re-submit the revised sitemap automatically thereby giving it a nudge to come look?

Resubmit when ever you want, you don't get penalised for it.
On Google's Webmaster Tools you can also tell Google how often your site gets updated, with one option as hourly. You may well want to tell it this as well.
An extra thought here... Since there's no fooling Google nowadays, if your site stops being updated hourly then probably best to set it back to daily, monthly or whatever - because if its crawling your site and not finding updates when you said there were then maybe it will count this against you - i dont know for sure, but if I was Google I wouldn't like liers!

I doubt it counts against you and I;ve personally never seen anything to support that. I'd imagine if your site isn;t updated hourly (which very few sites are) thewn Google will simply stop coming as regularly.

Do you folks have a suggestion of a good sitemap generator for Joomla? I've tried JCrawler, but it doesn't work for my site, it creates an almost empty xml ignoring my pages.
