You won't get much as a student, there's too much stigma attached and you have no experience. As Mythriel says, you're better off just doing some bits and bobs for fun. Invent a company, make a website for it.

You're going to have problems getting any work experience unless you have a portfolio - if everyone's really busy, you need to be able to show that you'll be an asset to them who can learn on the job rather than someone who it'll take time and resources away from client work to train.

First, design yourself a site to show off your portfolio. Then, as Mike says, invent a company and design a site for them - write a brief first, than solve the problem with your design.

Just gonna echo what others have said above.
You need to show your work and show that you'd be an asset.

Phone around local businesses, charities or community groups that might need a website and offer your services for free.
Get a nice bunch of sites completed and a decent looking portfolio site and bobs your mothers brother.

If you're looking for projects of things to do for a port and are stuck on ideas feel free to PM me. I do a fair amount of non-profit work and their sites could all use a re-design or even a thorough clean up.

You need to work out what you can offer a company as student and what makes you different to other students. At the end of the day it costs a company to take on employees they need to train.

You need to stand out from crowd basically, as there is, a s mentioned, a lot of stigma attached to being a student.

When I was at uni I used my final year project to get a junior job - it was a full ecommerce system, coded from scratch, with an admin area, connected to the Paypal api. Granted, I could do a lot better now, but at the time I guess it looked quite good coming from a student with no commercial experience. * end self praise * :)
