Hello Guys, about three months ago we decided to start a new small business.Well to try and cut costs I decided to have a go at putting a web-site together with no experience what so ever,I bought some "WYSIWYG" software, after I downloaded it I couldn't even put a letter on the page,to cut a long story short I managed to build our web-site.Having no confidence in getting it live I invited a someone who is experienced to help me get it live,he came out and showed me how to upload to the FTP client and that was it.
Its was going quite well and even reached the first page on google for a few days,it's on about the third now and a few other search engines. It's on places,on google analytics, and quite a few other sites, the problems I am NOT understanding are :

I have since changed quite a few items in my files and have uploaded the new ones via FTP,how come I have all my old pages showing on the net, should I be doing something ???

I bought a product which generates my site map and submits it to the search engines ,it also tells me of any SEO issues,it suggested to have different titles for each page,I have changed all the titles but now I daren't upload again in case I generate more pages :blush1:

I have also made my meta tags either bold or strong,is this correct ???

Also after reading a article on here I realise I have no H1,H2,or any other I created a banner for the head of the pages,do I need to revamp ???

I would so appreciate some advise ....go steady though I'm at my wits end now :blush1:

Oh and to top it off I am aware I have about three broken links on my pages,I have addressed this issue but again I daren't upload again because of all these pages appearing on the net :blush1:

Please Help.

When you say all your old pages are showing on the net, do you mean when you search in Google (for instance) of within your actual website? If the first then that is because Google has to do another trawl of the web to update first and this happens on set timescales and in the meantime what will appear are your cached pages (the ones stored by Google to display in search results). You will have to wait for Google to do it's next 'trawl'.

Meta tags shouldn't be formatted in any way, formatting is for HTML to tell the browser how to display your content/page/website etc and these tags have no place in the meta tags in the head section of your pages.

Header tags (i.e. h1, h2 etc) don't have to go at the very top of your pages in place of your banner. They should be used as titles for the sections on each page in order of importance like you would find headings in a newspaper.

Sums it all up pretty nicely to be fair.

You wont generate more pages, as the files you change will simply replace the files already on your server.

Meta tags aren't part of your body, so shouldn't be formatted. Although, if you mean keyword (the word that you want people to find you by when they search) then you can format them to make them stand out.

Whats your website? I can have a quick look over and give you some tips?

A way of getting your site re-indexed quicker is to ping it out on Social media to people who may be interested in your site. Another is to get a link to your site from another one which is busier/more prominent which gets re-indexed quicker and therefore so will yours.

Sitemaps
You didn't need to have bought software. Just sign up free for each search engine's webmaster tools - e.g.
http://www.google.co.uk/sitemaps

And then generate a free XML site map here - http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
Upload it to your home directory using FTP and then submit using the search engine's tools.

Broken Links
Broken links will HARM your SEO so do upload the 'fixed version'.

In all things remember you can't control search engines but you can help them to find your site quicker and to rank it better.

Thanks very much for all the replies,I have deleted the broken links which were graphics for photobucket and uploaded, when I first put my web-site on the net the title was "SHEER GOLD WEDDING CARS" and if I key in that these pages are still showing, since I have changed my titles to what they are relevant to "WEDDING CARS IN CARLISE AND SURROUNDING AREAS" and selected a different title for each page. One of my pages is on page 2 in google.I have made my key word strong and bold.

My web site is www.sheergoldweddingcars.co.uk

Thanks again for your help,I am new to all this.

My site is on Facebook and also have a face book page,it's also on several directories : Yell,Touch Local,Freeindex,Scoop and a few others,I am a total novice but have been doing whatever I can.

I'be had a look. In your meta keywords, remove the <strong></strong> tags, as it has no place being put there. To be honest, you can remove
<meta name="keywords" content="<strong>wedding car hire,Cumbria, Gretna Green, Carlisle, rolls royce,Cumbria, cars, vehicles, champagne, marriage, gretna green cars, gold, chauffeur, marriage, bride.groom, romantic, sheer gold wedding cars

wedding car hire in Carlisle</strong>

">

all together, as they have absolutely no bearing whatsoever and is pretty pointless.

With the titles, you've done the right thing of having different titles but you've only changed them slightly and they're still using the same keywords. What you're doing here is presenting Google with 5 or 6 pages that have similar keywords and it'll struggle to pick which one is the most relevant.

Change them to something like Contact Us - Contact Sheergold Wedding Cars, as not only does it describe what the page is, but is useful for screenreaders too

Thanks Jason,I will remove the tags, but now I,m confused to why I should change my title to what you have suggested,I want to be prominant on wedding car hire pages especially for Gretna Green and Carlisle,so if I changed it I wouldn't be found on these pages ....would I ?? :blush1:
