Ah you're in for a nasty surprise then.
Yes you will insurance depending on the manner of the event.

Is it a commercial event or just an event for a few (a lot!) friends?

Public Liability? Pretty sure you need it even for a ticketed, private event.

Couple hundred? Not sure exact on cost, get a quote :)

Yeah i'd go with assuming you'd need public liability.

Although to be fair, if the hotel has a function room it should have this covered.

If your making this into a business then yes

If not make them sign that this is a 'social event' and you can't be made responsible for any loss of equipment or injury of any kind.

Hi,

The hotel will have Public Liability but they often insist that you also have Public Liability in place - in any event this is good practice on your part to keep yourself protected. You may also want to consider Professional Indemnity (a policy that includes breach of data, confidentiality and inadvertently passing on a virus).

Most people that buy Public Liability will buy this annually but you can buy it on a per event basis, if you just need it to cover a specific event.

You will probably get better terms if you can demonstrate to the insurer that you have a written risk assessment in place for the event as well.

Let me know if you run into any problems.

Liam

contact the venue where you are hosting it and ask them what insurance you need. if they say none... you're free and clear. if not they'll tell you exactly what you need. :D

Contractually you may be fine with the hotel, but that doesn't help if something goes wrong and someone is taking Legal Action against you - the hotel's Public Liability will only cover slips, trips, fire etc at the venue.

Someone could still bring a claim against you, for something that was within your responsibility. Or indeed, just bring the claim against you as a professional claim (i.e. your failure to carry out the professional service to arrange the event safely and professionally) which would be excluded by a Public Liability policy....

If you are going to be responsible for bringing all of these people together in once place, then you have to recognise that you do have a duty of care to make sure that people and property are safe, and if that isn't the case and someone gets injured or property is stolen, then they will be able to bring legal action against you. Assuming you took every reasonable step to prevent this (and this is document in writing) then hopefully you would be able to defend an action like this, but it might still involve court and legal fees. And if you lost, damages. Most of which would be covered by arranging the right insurance beforehand.

Good luck anyway I hope it all goes well,

bazzie
