I'm designing a new e-commerce site and I'm curious what people think about this.
After adding a product to their basket, which do you think is the better option for the customer:
1: The customer is taken straight to the basket page, where they can review their whole order (including things such as shipping costs), then proceed to the checkout, or choose to continue shopping.
2: The customer gets some visual feedback to let them know that the product has been added to their basket, but they remain on the product page. The basket is accessible at any point from a link in the header.
Does anyone know of any research or testing on this? Does it depend on the site? I'm thinking that maybe for sites where people are likely to make multiple purchases that option 2 would be better, but for sites where the majority of users only make one significant purchase that option 1 would be preferable.
Interested to hear your thoughts. Cheers!

Where to go after adding to basket?

Majority =/= Everyone.
Even if 90% of people are single item shoppers and would be going to the cart anyway there is still 10% that aren't and those 10% would be annoyed by Option 1. Where as the 90% are not annoyed by Option 2.
You would be annoying 10% of users to try and please the other 90% in an aspect they don't particularly care about. Option 2 is standard fair, people who are buying single items expect to be in the minority.
Single Item system? Different story. It's impossible to buy multiple items so straight to checkout makes sense.
