Hi, I have a client with 3 eCommerce stores (roughly 30,000 unique visits per month) who are looking to move to a high quality, UK host.

Price isn't the driving factor, they are more concerned with customer support, uptime and quality of service.

What would be your recommendations? My 3 choices so far are AAISP, ID Net, Zen Internet. What do you think of these? Has anyone ever used them for hosting?

Thank you in advance! :)

With 30k monthly visits I'd highly recommend a VPS at minimum. I don't think a shared hosting account would be sufficient to be honest. Also, make sure when you choose a host that they use UK servers (not all UK hosts do).

As for the three companies you mentioned, I've never used them but maybe give them a call and chat about your requirements. It will at least give you an indication of their knowledge and customer service.

Hi Aled,

I have not used any of the 3 you mention. But I work for a high end UK host. We don't usually post on places like this because we are not cheap but we might be a fit with what you are looking for. We are a UK team with a UK datacentre (Manchester) and we specialise in Ecommerce hosting (specifically Magento).

You are certainly looking at a VPS with the traffic stats you mention. Our VPS packages can be seen here:

and some testimonials can be seen here

The guys on live chat wiull be happy to answer any specific questions. Hope that helps

My personal recommendation goes to NuBlue, every time.

Ewan and team have given me the best support I've ever had, and they run well-tuned environments on good iron. Nowhere near the cheapest but you get what you pay for and then some.

Hi Aled

30,000 unique visitors a month is sadly not an accurate figure to work from, not even close...
You would be better off determining the actual data transfer/bandwidth usage and space, as this is a better indicator of resources.

Typically though, on our shared servers, this would not be a problem at all..

Our web hosting is classed as premium hosting, somewhat undersold if you like, but often saves people a lot of money, where others would push you towards a VPS (Unsuitable) or a server, with us, shared hosting in many cases is fine.

Our reviews are monitored independantly by ratepoint too, we dont write our own lol

Another excellent UK Server team is Fasthosts.co.uk who have their datacenter in South West of England, Gloucestershire.
They are very reliable and very helpful guys.
Give them a look.
They might suprise you.

Thanks,
Kyle

How do you determine the actual data transfer/bandwidth? I had a look at google but didn't find anything concrete, please help.

They and their three flood vulnerable backup generators on Southgate St in Gloucester will never surprise me again. Don't get me wrong, there was a time when it was a tight and happy outfit but those days are long gone. The emphasis has been for some time now to move away from providing hosting direct to individuals instead prefering to deal with re-sellers of their services, so much so that the break rooms have a live LCD display of re-sellers signed up that month/ day and presumably some sort of bonus system. This may have something to do with the cramped conditions in the attic sweatbox where front line support is located.

I personally couldn't care less where the support is located as long as they are knowledgeable, are very fluent same language as myself and reply in an acceptable time frame (within less than 10 mins for me - have used some good hosts so probably have high expectations).

I'm yhet to come across an a "good" offshore support line yet, but if they did provide me with support as per above their location wouldn't matter. However, offshore support goes hand in hand with:

  • Advisors reading off scripts
  • Advisors have little technical knowledge
  • Advisors not understanding your question/needs
  • Advisors not speaking English fluent enough
  • Crap response times
  • Can never speak to anyone senior when you want to get something fixed
etc. etc.

Unfortunately, bigger hosts (especially 1&1) in my experience don't come anywhere close to the above.
