Hi

I wondered how you decide when it's time to not add new sites to a server you have but get a new server.

I have a few servers, my older ones are full in terms of disk space, but are clearly slower than my newest one. My newest one is not yet full in terms of disk space and still seems fast, but I have so many sites on there I wonder if its time to get a new one. But how do I know?

Its not disk space that matters, its the CPU and RAM. The more existing sites use, the slower the server will become.

So how do you decide what your cut off point is? It should be BEFORE the sites are visibly slowing down.

In my opinion it should be when the server starts to slow down compared to when there is just 1 site on there, in order for the websites to be served at their fastest the server can provide, but how do you measure this?

I cannot find much information about this online, yet think this is an important topic.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

i.e. maybe a monitoring tool to monitor resources and you decide what a cut off would be?

I think this is quite important but cant find anything online so would be good to find out what people do, if anything.

We have a number of servers similarly to yourself. However, it's a bit different for us as we sell hosting accounts so while disk space may be allocated, it's not necessarily 'used up'.

We constantly monitor the server load and we have a set value that once reached, we get another server.

I too though would like to hear what other people do.

I have the same 'sort' of problem (see My Intro). I've decided to go VPS as hardware becoming dated seems to happen every 2 years and moving sites is a royal time consuming pain in the rear :D
