I am fairly new to this concept, but am reading a lot about it. It is actually quite popular and looks like you can make some decent money from it. Buying domain or expired domain names for re-sale. Does anyone do this? How exactly does it work?

I have never bought domains that are already used or that are being re-sold. I just go to like Yahoo! or GoDaddy and buy new ones from there. Yahoo is selling domains right now for $2.99 I think.

I noticed recently that during the most recent uk version of big brother some guy bought up all the domain names of all the people in the house - using their names and I guess he was hoping to make money from them in the future - nice idea but it's bit sneaaky too and I'm not sure I agree with it to be honest.

I think it probably takes a certain type of person to be successful at this, just as it takes a certain type of person to make money in real estate speculation.

I have one domain name that I've watched for the last 2.5 years hoping they'll forget to renew by their annual date. They haven't forgotten yet. If they renew next year and *still* haven't done anything with that URL, I'm going to offer to buy it from them. I have specific plans for it, though.

Beyond that, I'm just not comfortable expending money in this direction because I wouldn't have a clue what I was doing. I think it would turn into a money pit for me.

Hi,
Just to share, I am in this field too. It's called Domaining or sort...if I am not wrong. These people are so-called the Domainers ! Well, just like any business model, it could takes time and effort in this model too. You'll need to have a good patienct in this while waiting the domain's price to goes up or have a good insight on what would possibly be the next trends. :p

However, there are some other domainers going to another option, they would look for IBL and google PR in buying or grabbing the domain name. In this scenario, they are likely to place the newly owned domain to PPC revenue model. Of course some domain might just generate little revenue, but just think it as a whole number game! If they own a few thousands domain names and each just earn them few dollar per month, it could still bring a good amount of money!

So well, there are many route to this! The key point is to do a lot of homeworks and analysis.
Good Luck! :D
