Hey,
I'm in the process of looking for a decent laptop. My budget is about £400 and for that I want something that's a good desktop replacement if possible. No gaming on it, apart from Football Manager.

My current PC specs:
Windows XP SP3
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3600
2.01 GHz
896MB RAM

Can anyone recommend any particular brands/models?

Best I could find at short googling..

Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 15 Notebook PC / Intel Core i3-370M (2.40GHz) / 4GB RAM / 500GB HDD / DVD+-RW DL / Intel HD Graphics / 15.6" HD AntiGlare / Gigabit Ethernet - ThinkPad bgn - Bluetooth / Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64bit

The OpenBox Laptops section at Misco is worth watching for unused bargains but these come and go on a daily basis. Failing that try EuroPC.co.uk, some folk swear by them but personally since they palmed me off with a couple of lemons with dodgy glide pads have not been overly keen to use them again.

Brand new laptops are a mug's game, like new cars. Mine does everything I want it to, was over £1500 at launch and I picked it up for less than £400 because it's 2 years old.

Or if you catch them just before it gets replaced by another model, or as it is being replaced, they tend to go cheaper. I always find Amazon has some interesting laptop deals funnily enough. Also ask.com and places like that, but try Amazon, it can be interesting.

We all like brand new and shiny things, personally I think it's the smell of new plastic that does it for some tech heads. Is it me or do Apple products not have it?

However try telling your average user that to typically double the performance of a laptop involves merely adding some more RAM and posibbly changing over to a linux O/S and it's like watching a five year old being dragged by its mother out shopping for underpants.

HP aren't bad, easy enough to get parts for unlike other brands. You can always update the spec at a later date if you need to.

I always like Toshibas for the kind of low-middle end of the market if that helps. And yeah nothing wrong with HP. Maybe you won't get a Toshiba for £400, maybe £450 or £500.

Realistically at the price range you're talking about I think you'd probably find it much of a much-ness really. They're all pretty similar really aren't they? Acer, Hp, etc. I think you'd probably be pretty chuffed with whatever you bought.

Basically the reason I like Toshibas at that price range is I like their keyboards and screens. I soon discovered that really they're all pretty similar at the low end under the hood.

I haven't actually got a laptop myself, but I looked around for a few people over the last couple of years and every time ended up with a Toshiba Satellite which to this day all of them are happy with, if that helps.
