Heya,

I thought I'd start my own thread on this as I don't want to hijack others.
I'm hoping to get some advice on becoming a web developer from scratch hopefully to make it possible to start a new career.
I'm currently in planning in the oil industry and develop some excel systems for them so I have a rough idea of databases.

I've read alot online and the forums here and bought creating a website the missing manual to start with as well as headfirst html, xhtml and css.
I'm also looking at buying css the missing manual and got dreamweaver CS5 for my web editor though atm I'm using Notepad++ to learn the code with.

I looked at an open university course in Computing and IT but it doesn't seem to have the focus on web design and development that I want and the courses at degree level that do require attendance which I can't due because of my job.

Can anyone offer any advice on developing this as a career e.g. qualifications etc.
I also looked at online courses with thinkvitamin and lynda to help build a foundation.

I eventually hope to use the skills to goto the US though I'm told a degree is more or less essential to get a job there particularly in this field.
I'm really serious about doing this right so would value any advice anyone can offer.

if i would start a new career now i would go exclusively with java-development
I think thats one of the most payed jobs these days.

Thats rather deep specialization compared to average web developer but it allow to create completely awesome things.
And again its in huge demand. In fact web-programmers are in demand in general. Imagine biggest projects like ebay or facebook etc — those need like few designers and like hundreds developers. Now imagine their budgets.

In our country at least good java developer is like rare gem on an auction xD Its not rare that projects with huge budgets are unable to find enough developers simply because there are none available and they need like 100 so there are loads of free courses etc. Not sure how it works in UK.

Anyhow i strongly encourage you to go that way rather then become "just another guy who can build small site from scratch". But hey, dont blame me later if it doesnt work xD

Will def take a look, cheers guys.
As it happens my company currently have me creating excel based systems for them which I've recently started linking to access backends. Think they also want me to start learning some oracle.
So if java would enable me to create apps on the fly for work it'd be a major bonus and worth the time spent.
