Hi everyone,

Usually the first thing I present to the client is a screenshot of a Photoshop mockup of the front page. I modify this mockup according to their feedback and once we agree with what appears on this mockup, I start converting it into a live web page.

Do you agree with this way of working, and if not how do you proceed ?

The first document you should ever give a client is a contract.

Well strictly speaking it would be a proposal...but yeah as the above, always make sure you have a signed contract before showing any work, before starting in fact!

The contract was implied .. So once the project is officially started, do you first show a static mockup or a web page to the client ?

Static mockup in Photoshop, or similar, is how I do it. Much easier to change layers of a PSD than it is to recode a site.

Agreeing on a wireframe first is also a good way to do it,

Need to be careful with that in my opinion. A wire frame sounds nice and easy in theory but can easily turn into full blown information architecture - which is bloody time consuming if done correctly.

PSD mockup of home page uploaded to net, so they can view it full screen rather than attached to e-mail.

Make changes once clients like I do 2-3 other mockups and get sign up then code site.

The first thing i ask for is a list of questions about hat the site needs to achieve, and some content to work with - after all without an idea of those how can you design?...

Usually design Photoshop files to show designs to client. Test and tweak from untill there happy. Then once finally agreed and we have a signed copy of the design we will go ahead with creating the XHTML and Stylesheets etc.

I too would like an answer to that question.

I used Andy Clarke's Contract Killer as a starting point.

Nice, I'll stick it into Microsoft Word, style it to my future company's branding and export it as PDF. Thank You.

Got your Message by the way, I shall be in touch soon.

In simple terms this is how we breakdown a job.

  • Quote or Proposal (depending on size of job)
  • Job Scope & Contract
  • Deposit Taken
  • Concept(s)
  • Develop & Present to Client
  • Client Training
  • Project Live & Final Payment

My current client I presented with an interactive pdf done in Fireworks, which they thought was reasonably groovy.

Started with a wireframe then now adding bits.

But the wireframe thing - Rallport has a point, you can get completely snowed under with them. Also it depends on the client. Will they understand that the wireframe is NOT how the site will look graphically?

I think in general though, if the client understands at least a little bit about wireframes, it's worth trying to start with them, otherwise you get bogged down with the graphics before you have the layout properly sorted out, which take longer to change than a simple wireframe.

Not really, I've only done one so far lol, it was a bit of an experiment.

But - download the 30 day trial of Fireworks, knock up a quick wireframe with master page, hotspot the menu items and save all pages as interactive pdf and play around with it. It's a bit rough and ready, but it's a fairly interesting way of presenting the site to the client so they can get an idea of how everything comes together. Without having to be online.

Also, I understand InDesign does a similar thing. I think in both, you can put simulated "rollovers" in as well although I haven't bothered with this yet.

Only one I could find was this one which show it in it's most basic form. You could probably knock this up in about 5-10 minutes.
