It depends on your requirements I guess. I have my tags and categories indexed on my photo blog but not date archives. Lots of my category and tag pages rank well and to be honest that's what they were intended to do. I have categories as the type of photography and tags as the area.
I think if the they are set up properly they can be very useful and relevant and much more likely to be used in some cases rather than data based archives. If one of my pages or posts is more relevant it ranks better for that term.
Each blog should be configured to suit its own merits which only the admin can decide.

Just not convinced that category and tag pages being indexed is a good thing, as for a search term my category appears in #1, whilst the actual post appears in the #2 spot.
