Hey Fredrik, this may be a little 'wishy washy' and may not be the answer you were hoping for. But one of the things i have to say right front the top is there is no magic bullet methodology to get increased engagement or fans etc..

I think you also have made very common error and started with 'choosing the technology' which your campaign will extend from first prior to noting any objectives or strategy.

I suggest the following... Take step back.. and seriously take a minute to breath and put your thoughts down in the following order..POST

People: What kind of people are you trying to achieve, where do these people 'hang out'. what are the people you're looking for doing online... you don't want to start launching any campaign targeting people who create blogs for exmple when the people you seek prefer to simply listen or spectate.

Objectives: what are your objectives, and make them SMART ( specific, measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time dependent)

Strategy: what is your idea of pushing your message forward, do you want others to carry it for you, what kind of relationships do you envisage?

Technologies: What kind of platforms are you going to be using to conduct your campaign, Is FB and social media booking marking sites the only formula? Blogs, wikis, forums, social news sites, yahoo answers ect..

I suggest you answer the above first and then lets start putting something together.

If you have thousands of random followers on twitter, facebook friends etc. then that won;t help you at all - in fact, you've most likely wasted a lot of your own time - as all those followers will lead to nothing conversion wise :( The fact people aren't liking your posts says a lot, as the content is not relevant to them in the least.

As sandeep says, get to know your niche and find out what areas.

For instance, maybe get involved on student forums or groups. Maybe even engague with select twitter profiles who get mentioned a lot lot.

Also, you seem to be measuring the success of this by the volume of traffic you recieve. You should be measuring it using a ratio of coversions against visits. This is much more accurate and useful because you could get 1,000 unique vists to your site from people from unrelated sources who will just bounce off, but 0 conversions.

Does your website have the basic to track such things? E.g. it could be ven as simple as tracking a the submission of a contact form on your website and analysing the data in Google Analaytics - which is pretty much the strandard for this sort of thing.

In short, don't think number of people or followers, or even facebook likes. Think conversions, because conversions are ultimately what any site on the internet wants.

As said by rallport,
You shouldnt be measuring your site by traffic, the main thing you want to keep an eye on is the conversion from your social media sites, as everyone can press the like button on the social media site but it takes another strategy to get them to move to your site and sign-up, but thats not just it, you need to atleast have them sign-up and also contribute to your site. If you already have a big market on most of your social media sites, thats a start now you need to stop and think about what your users really want to see/read and actually get them to talk and spread the word for you or even like the post, doing this increases your link backs to your articles or posts which then will drive traffic to your site. Also a good one is using spoilers on your social media sites, making them have to sign-up to your website to view the rest, This is a cheeky and dirrty way of getting members but can help make your site more popular and help your page rank and SEO. But if you keep the infomation good on your website, giving them more to look at and keeping them interested, your success rate will then increase!
