Hello, so I run a small clothing business, we've done a lot better than I expected when I first opened up, so I'm looking to channel some of that money back into advertising and the first thing I thought of was AdWords.

Although, I've heard a lot of mixed opinions about it and was wondering if you guys could give me any advice?
Minimum amount of money to make a difference, optimum, etc... etc...

Any help is appreciated. :)

I run Adwords for a website. All I can tell you is that it's extremely expensive, and tricky to setup properly. It also requires a lot of maintenance to keep it running efficiently, and if your line of business is competitive you may find it has a fairly poor return.

But yeah, it is very, very expensive, it's not something you could run for £5/10 a day. Our budget is £3500 a month, or £42000 a year, and that only just about gets us onto the first page of Google.

Maintaining an Adword account is indeed a serious thing. Know your deepest intention why you are doing it so it could guide you consistently in each and every campaign you have.

Hmmm, decisions decisions. We seem to be generating a lot of google hits anyway. I think I may just contact specific sites for dedicated advertisements.

To start of with:

  • Pick a small niche
  • Choose an inner page on your site optimised for that niche - this will be your niche. If it has a decent pagerank and some quality incoming links, this will help you
  • Use some long tail terms relating to that niche, avoid short til terms to start with - as you want to maximise you conversion rate from the off
Remeber, you only want to be paying for genuinely interested, niche and relevant people who enter you site - NOT someone who has clicked on your ad after searching for a very broad term. To begin with, I'd use some very strict and specific matching options for your keywords..
