Ok so I signed a confidentiality agreement with my client. Usual stuff like a can't talk about bla bla bla. But I signed over the copy right of my design to them and agreed not to show it in my portfolio.
Only problem now is that I have designed the best website I have ever done and I want to show it my portfolio lol. I will work out some arrangement with them to sort this.
My questions is: if they own the copyright can I still put it in my portfolio? Or do I need to own the copy right to allow me to put it in my portfolio?
Because if they give me "permission" to use in my portfolio but they still own the copyright could they not just when ever they feel like it tell me to take it down?
Thanks.

1. handing over copyright of the design once you been paid to do the job is the norm
2. if you signed a nda no chance, your own fault for not reading the small print! last two months 90% of my work has been things I can't show in my portfolio I don't care as long as my balance is in the black

All you can do is negotiate with the company for right to use this work in your portfolio.
Spin them some line about how you want to write a glowing case study on the process that'll not only boost their reputation but also improve their SEO rank. If they allow rights to use it make sure there's a non-revoke policy so they can't change their mind.
In future make sure you have you have a clause written in to your stock contract that states all work will be used for the facilitation of promoting your work and business. As Panda said above, it's normal and expected for the copyright to be handed over to the website owner.
Of course you will get full NDA sites and when these come along you have to weigh up if it's worth it or not. Around half my past work has been NDA, any client that wants an NDA signing has to pay a premium for the right to do so.

To know knowledge, the only way you wouldn't be able to display it in your portfolio is if you've signed a specific NDA.
Only way to find out is to display it. All they can do initially is ask you to take it down = especially if it's the best site you've done so far.
