I have read and read and read and I simply can't find an answer...

Hoping someone can help... Im looking to get some experience building ecommerce sites as I have a few potential clients that have shown some interest in them

what I want to know, can I create a site in HTML and CSS and incorporate magento in order to create an ecommerce site?

or am i missing something?

I have no experience with PHP but I am a pretty confident coder in the likes of Java and C# so im sure it is only a change in syntax and slight change in semantics

Do you think it is do-able from my experience so far?

If anyone knows of any good tutorial or anything on ecommerce, preferrably using magento it would be great :)

any other tips is appreciated also

Thanks :)

To be honest until you're very familiar with PHP (and Zend knowledge would benefit you greatly when dealing with Magento) I'd completely stay away from it for now.

Depending on your budget I'd either suggest sub-contracting out the work to a developer or going for a smaller ecommerce platform (although you still probably will need to dabble with some php).

There are 100's of ecommerce platforms around that don't need PHP knowledge, eg...

X-cart and CS-cart both use Smarty based templates - if you have a programmers head on then Smarty won't take long to pick up

Jshop has it's own tag based templating system - has a small learning curve but the syntax is straightforward, plus it has a ton of PHP hooks for the adventurous :)

Opencart has a good following, I prefer Prestashop (also uses smarty templates)

you can most of the info you need here

http://docs.magentocommerce.com/
http://www.magentoco...om/design_guide

Also, if you’re looking for a good development resource, I highly recommend you get php|architect’s Guide to Programming with Magento.

Best bet is to install it and have a play..
