Last week I started a part time job maintaining a website. So this includes making new pages, adding new links to the navigation and just simple things really.

Yesterday the boss wanted me to rearrange the navigation links around which are all images and have a roll-over effect. So I did it but one of the images didn't work. No problem, I just checked through trying to find where I made the mistake. He saw that the site was missing a link, I told him I'll fix it and it will just take 5-10 mins searching where I went wrong.

He complains saying that I should just revert back to the old one if it is to hard for me. And also said I shouldn't be messing around with the style sheet, I have to change it to change the navigation and do a lot of the changes. He then says the the web designer is a professional web designer, further putting me down.

I just feel like I'm not going to be lasting long there, especially since he complains how much he pays me.

Anyone have any similar stories to tell, bad managers, bosses? Maybe I'm just being too sensitive.

Always work on a local copy rather than live.

I do for the most part but hey I thought this would only be a minor change. I will have to make sure now I just stick to the local copy of it.

backup backup backup

I do get the feeling a lot of employees are getting more than the usual grief because of the current business climate. You are not the only one. Businesses are under more pressure. Perhaps you are being a little over-sensitive but at the same time no-one likes to hear they are rubbish!

Just learn from it and don't give the guy any more ammunition

Oh there was a backup fortunately, I just really wanted to get it sorted because I know I can do it, and it's not a big task, just must have missed something.

But yeah I'm going to have to learn from it.

Agreed. And just keep taking the wage and think of the money. Kerching!

This is why I don't want to ever go back to working for someone else.
But really on the other side, my freelance clients can sometimes be rude and demanding.

Ever since I buggered up first ecommerce work about 3 years because I was working live I have gotten into the habit of downloading the whole website to computer before making changes - even for minor changes like the ones you're making.

For smaller sites I tend to rename the styles sheets until I knopw my update works E.g. styles_280911-1733.css etc.

An employer should respect and value his employees.

Doesn't sound like the best situation to be in!
