I'm doing some small work for a client on an old website of theirs and when I go to upload the changes, I get a '550 Permissions' error. Is there anyway I can change this? Never encountered an error before, so any help will be much appreciated.

Might mean your FTP account's been created in the wrong group, or permissions on the files are set incorrectly.

From what I can gather, the details I have are the master details. How can I tell if I have the full permissions?

For this you will have to contact the web hosting provider, its a minor issue they should be able to fix it for you.

See if you can chmod something to 777. If you get permission denied when doing that, you'll know it's a problem with the user.
