I'm going to replace my failing hard drive I've tried making an img using driveimage xml but I get a msg saying it cant lock the drive properly so the image may be damaged would I be better making a boot cd with driveimage xml on it and using that ?

have you tried acronis? Free version here.

or even running a chkdsk first to see if that can fix things before the backup

Tried chkdsk & seagate tools but they cant repair the drive. I shall have a look at acronis cheers for the link

Looks like I need a western digital drive for this

If you can't get the disk to work, try putting it in a ziploc bag with a couple of sachets of silica (DO NOT try this without the silica, as moisture will totally shaft your disk). Put that in another ziploc bag (you want to be squeezing the air out of these before sealing them.

Stick it in the freezer overnight, then when you whip it out you'll have about half an hour to connect it up and get as much data off it as possible.

Chris I can still get the system to boot with this drive so I don't think the freezer trick is needed yet

I suppose it will depend on the condition of the hard drive, what did you use to test the hard drive health?

As a matter of course I would get your data off that you need, everything else can be replaced

As for reinstalling, look into a program called Ninite, really streamlines the process.
