Hello I am doing a Web Design Course and I was going to buy 1 of the following desktop pc computers;

HP Pavilion G5410uk Desktop PC

•Dual-core Intel® Pentium® E5800 (3.20 GHz)
•Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64 bit
•Memory: 4GB
•Hard drive: 1TB
•Optical drive: DVD writer.

or/

ADVENT DT1310 Desktop PC

•Intel® Core™ i5-2310 processor
•Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium•Memory: 8GB
•Hard drive: 1.5TB
•Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 530

or/

Compare

HP Pavilion G5460uk Desktop PC

•Intel® Core™ i3-2100 (3.10 GHz)
•Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium•Memory: 4GB
•Hard drive: 1TB
•Optical drive: DVD writer

with a new 22" monitor

Can anyone advise me which 1 would be best as the 2 hp ones are more affordable?

Kind Reguards,

Jo

Hello web-itech, Is it because of the 64bit there is also a memory upgrade for these pc's to 8gb, is there a computer better than these you would recommend, what is the best processer, the computer you mentioned G5410UK is reduced to £349, with the advent pc at £599 & the G5460UK pc at £399 or £499 with a 22" monitor, what do you think of a touch screen pc, are they any good?

Cheers,

Jo

yes 64bit would be better as you can upgrade memory like you said, although 4GB memory is well enough, im running off 1gb memory atm and PC is fast enough although i have got 2GB memory on its way (i wasnt paying like £40 for 4gb)

unless your going to be running 10adobe programmes at the same time, running facebook(stupid memory hogger) and aload of other crap then 4GB is enough

also ive used touch screen pcs before and they suck, really pointless expecially if your sitting at a proper desk

The 2nd and 3rd are a better spec, but you'll end up regretting any of them as they're all built in cheap, tinny boxes with no build quality to speak of.

You're better off buying a decent PC from a respectable system builder who knows what they're doing. Try Scan. Yes, they cost a little more, but they're not built in biscuit tins, they're quieter, more stable and more reliable.

This is why so many people jump ship to Apple products - they buy the cheapest, crappiest PCs they can lay their hands on, then when spending 4x the amount on a Mac delivers a better experience they forget they could get the same level of quality by spending 2x the amount on a half-decent PC in the first place.

Less keen on Novatech, they're not as transparent about the quality of components they use (especially power supplies, I've seen them use some shockingly cheap ones).

PS. You might want to look at your signature link.

I've never looked at that too closely to be honest...

I've had 3 novatech PC's and got a couple for family members over the years and never had an issue with them :)

and thanks for the heads up :)

Personally would not buy any of them. Go for a decent second-hand or previous years model. Misco.co.uk is shifting some Tier1 Fujitsu ESPRIMO C5900 3.20GHz / 40GB / 1GB / DVD / Windows XP-Pro Refurb PC's for under a £100 including delivery. Say another £60-100 to upgrade the graphics card and RAM (if you find it needs it) leaving something left in the budget for one or more monitors. Plus because it runs WinXp it's ideal for those copies of Dreamweaver8 and Photoshop CS2 that so many students seem to aquire from somewhere ;)

So unless you plan playing games or getting into video editing then any brand new state of the art PC are pretty much overkill for most webdesign tasks. Even if you're heavily into photoshop remember that you are designing for the computer screen and not for enlargement to poster size so it's unlikey any image being worked upon is going to need more than 500MB of live RAM be assigned to the graphics editor package.

Processor Speed..
aside from minimum requirements for the graphics editor it does not really matter as you can only type code so fast and your connection speed to the internet will also be same. It's worth noting a lot of the junior members here are designing some quality sites on way less powerful equipment.

HDD storage .. Hard drives have come a long way since the early days in terms of capacity and reliability, however there is an old saying about 'having all ones eggs in the same basket' so I tend to favour having two smaller devices with one acting as mirror copy (preferably removable).

Processor & Mobo... I'm not going to open the Althon Vs Intel spat but do go for 64bit whatever if budget permits but it's not a vital requirement. Then take a good look at the motherboard RAM specs as often what's fitted falls way short of what it will actually hold. This has been for many years a quirk of windows PC's and why people do love their Mac's because they always shipped with loads or RAM.

WinXp and Win7 top out at 4GB (it's hardcoded in the O/S) unless you have a 64bit processor but for most webdesigners it's way more than enough RAM.

NB: if you buy a new PC opening the case to upgrade the RAM yourself voids the warranty

i would take Renaissance-Design's advice and buy a quality machine. i bought an hp pavillion, got dust build up and overheating in the crappy case (also my fdault for not cleaning it! take note) and lost mobo and powersupply. bought a gaming case (though i'm not a hard core gamer), proper power supply and now everything runs fine.

I should go for this one. Has the best specifications among the three. Good Luck!

why not consider apple imac. It does comes with a quite decent spec(so to speak) and is reliable and durable. Great for designing use.

Why not go for a custom built PC? I'm just about to put one on the classified bit which might be of interest to you.
