Your browser stats?

IE8 and less now account for just 22% of users to our site. Chrome accounts for 23%, Firefox 23%, IE9 16% and Safari 10%.
That means about 75% of our visitors are using a modern, up to date browser.
When compared to last year, this time, IE8 and below accounted for about 55% of all our traffic.
Chrome, FF and Safari combined only accounted for about 38%.
IE6 and 7 combined only account for 1.2% of our traffic now.
Would you bother coding your websites to work for that 1.2%? Frankly, considering it looks like that will have dropped to about 0.5% by Xmas, I'm not looking at making our new website work for these old browsers.

Accomodate for:
Firefox - Latest
Chrome - Latest
Safari - Latest
Internet Explorer - Latest - Minus 1
If people can't be bothered to update there browsers, why should I be bothered accommodating for them!
At least that's how I try to work. Generally I'll finish the project to the above spec then the client tells me their running ie6

I don't check Safari because I don't have it and I hate Apple software >:/
You install iTunes and all of a sudden you've got iTunes, Safari and Quicktime, so uninstalled the lot.

I'm pretty much the same. I do code for IE8 but it does involve slightly adjusting my styling with a separate stylesheet.
I don't code for IE6/7 at all any more. No point, they're all but dead.
Chrome is set to surpass IE in 10 months judging by current trends.

Whoa. Safari is a good 10% of web traffic that you're just dismissing there.
Safari is webkit anyway, just like Chrome, so if you code for Chrome you're pretty much coding for Safari.

Yeah exactly. I don't bother because, despite the fact that I don't like it, it still is a good browser, and like you said, it's just like Chrome, so I think it's not really much of a risk to not double-check in it.

Where's the other 20% of your traffic coming from? Or did you mean 40% IE traffic?

Jeez Mike keep me busy why don't you
Usage stats over 10 sites on my *new* server combined and averaged out :
Firefox 38.9%
Chrome 36.4%
Safari 14.1%
I.E 8.9% *
Opera 0.4%
Android, Blackberry, Mozilla and Konqueror make up the last bit
If I log into my old server stats I.E is around 3.8-4.2% total. Panda Doodle only gets 3.8% IE traffic
* IE usage in detail
9 - 3.6%
8 - 4.6%
7 - 0.4%
6 - 0.1%
5 - 0% (although there where two users!)
Just under 70% of traffic comes from windows users so the majority of them have clued up

I usually code for
Firefox = Latest

Opera = Latest
Internet Explorer = 7+
I have no choice but to make sure the site is usable in IE7 but if it was as low as 1.2% then I would probably not be quite so worried.

I code for Firefox first (because it's just plain easier to code with Firebug. Then test for Chrome & IE versions. Which versions of IE depends on site stats. I manage some phone carrier portals (LG...HTC) who get a lot of IE6 hits. It its just a normal client site, I will look at in IE6 to see if the layout is still intact but will not fix minor things... in other words... I don't spend more than 5 minutes on it.

I used to be quite vocal about designing for IE6, but I think I've finally reached the point where enough is enough. The stats over at http://www.w3counter.com/ are still showing IE6 at around 2%, but I'm beginning to wonder how many of those browsers are really just web developers testing sites in IETester.... or trolls who've set their useragent to IE6
If you're not designing for IE6/7/8 I'd really recommend adding a jscript popup warning people that their browser a) sucks, b ) is insecure, and c) won't display a lot of sites correctly.
For any commercial site I'd still make sure it worked fine in IE7 as it's not too hard and you can bodge a lot of layout issues with overflow: auto. IMHO too many people use IE7 to write it off completely.

The high IE stats as best I can figure are probably due to visitors using public library computers during the week as IE useage figures drop off sharply at weekends and evenings.
