According to the analytics for the website for the company I work for, old versions of IE are dying shockingly quickly.

IE8 and less now account for just 22% of users to our site. Chrome accounts for 23%, Firefox 23%, IE9 16% and Safari 10%.

That means about 75% of our visitors are using a modern, up to date browser.

When compared to last year, this time, IE8 and below accounted for about 55% of all our traffic.

Chrome, FF and Safari combined only accounted for about 38%.

IE6 and 7 combined only account for 1.2% of our traffic now.

Would you bother coding your websites to work for that 1.2%? Frankly, considering it looks like that will have dropped to about 0.5% by Xmas, I'm not looking at making our new website work for these old browsers.

I always work like this:

Accomodate for:
Firefox - Latest
Chrome - Latest
Safari - Latest
Internet Explorer - Latest - Minus 1

If people can't be bothered to update there browsers, why should I be bothered accommodating for them!

At least that's how I try to work. Generally I'll finish the project to the above spec then the client tells me their running ie6

I actually make sites like this:

Firefox - Latest
Chrome - Latest
Internet Explorer - Latest
Opera - Latest

I don't check Safari because I don't have it and I hate Apple software >:/
You install iTunes and all of a sudden you've got iTunes, Safari and Quicktime, so uninstalled the lot.

I'm pretty much the same. I do code for IE8 but it does involve slightly adjusting my styling with a separate stylesheet.

I don't code for IE6/7 at all any more. No point, they're all but dead.

Chrome is set to surpass IE in 10 months judging by current trends.

Whoa. Safari is a good 10% of web traffic that you're just dismissing there.

Safari is webkit anyway, just like Chrome, so if you code for Chrome you're pretty much coding for Safari.

Yeah exactly. I don't bother because, despite the fact that I don't like it, it still is a good browser, and like you said, it's just like Chrome, so I think it's not really much of a risk to not double-check in it.

It wouldn't require much effort to have it on your PC just to be sure.

Be conscientious!

36.4 + 38.9 + 4 = 79%.

Where's the other 20% of your traffic coming from? Or did you mean 40% IE traffic?

Jeez Mike keep me busy why don't you

Usage stats over 10 sites on my *new* server combined and averaged out :

Firefox 38.9%
Chrome 36.4%
Safari 14.1%
I.E 8.9% *
Opera 0.4%

Android, Blackberry, Mozilla and Konqueror make up the last bit

If I log into my old server stats I.E is around 3.8-4.2% total. Panda Doodle only gets 3.8% IE traffic

* IE usage in detail

9 - 3.6%
8 - 4.6%
7 - 0.4%
6 - 0.1%
5 - 0% (although there where two users!)

Just under 70% of traffic comes from windows users so the majority of them have clued up ;)

I guess it all depends on the type of visitor's to the site here are the stats for the school I work at:

1. Internet Explorer 61%
2. Chrome 17%
3. Firefox 9%
4. Safari 8%
5. Ipad 2%

IE Breakdown:

1. IE8 45%
2. IE7 27%
3. IE9 26%
4. IE6 1.9%

I usually code for
Firefox = Latest
Chrome = Latest
Safari = Latest
Opera = Latest
Internet Explorer = 7+

I have no choice but to make sure the site is usable in IE7 but if it was as low as 1.2% then I would probably not be quite so worried.

Aggregate from a couple of sites I either run myself or help maintain.

Firefox 44.20%
Chrome 34.38%
Internet Explorer 14.06%
Safari 5.58%
Opera 1.34%

Just over 14% of IE visitors use IE6.

Chrome: 37.58%
Firefox: 36.81%
Safari: 12.97%
Internet Explorer (all): 10.55%
Opera 0.99%

IE Stats:

IE9: 58.33%
IE8: 22.92%
IE7: 11.46%
IE6: 7.29%

I code for Firefox first (because it's just plain easier to code with Firebug. Then test for Chrome & IE versions. Which versions of IE depends on site stats. I manage some phone carrier portals (LG...HTC) who get a lot of IE6 hits. It its just a normal client site, I will look at in IE6 to see if the layout is still intact but will not fix minor things... in other words... I don't spend more than 5 minutes on it.

Gaming website stats;
Firefox - 53.25%
Chrome - 24.24%
IE - 14.53%

Corporate website stats;
IE - 46.91%
Firefox - 39.62%
Chrome - 9.18%

I used to be quite vocal about designing for IE6, but I think I've finally reached the point where enough is enough. The stats over at http://www.w3counter.com/ are still showing IE6 at around 2%, but I'm beginning to wonder how many of those browsers are really just web developers testing sites in IETester.... or trolls who've set their useragent to IE6 :)

If you're not designing for IE6/7/8 I'd really recommend adding a jscript popup warning people that their browser a) sucks, b ) is insecure, and c) won't display a lot of sites correctly.

For any commercial site I'd still make sure it worked fine in IE7 as it's not too hard and you can bodge a lot of layout issues with overflow: auto. IMHO too many people use IE7 to write it off completely.

Job Hunter Project:

Internet Explorer 46.87%
Firefox 24.72%
Chrome 17.25%
Safari 6.84%
Android Browser 1.55%
Opera 0.87%
Opera Mini 0.47%
Mozilla Compatible Agent 0.45%
BlackBerry8520 0.19%
Playstation 3 0.18%

IE breakdown:

8.0 58.02%
9.0 19.94%
7.0 18.24%
6.0 3.80%

The high IE stats as best I can figure are probably due to visitors using public library computers during the week as IE useage figures drop off sharply at weekends and evenings.
