Best way of doing keyword research

I use the link as posted by adrenalinefeed to get a list of keyword alternatives.
With this long list, I work out which ones will yield the highest ROI for least competition for my client. (There's no point in aiming a website for a generic keyword like "cars", which has huge traffic but huge competition, when I can aim a website for "buy a red car" which might have a better competition/traffic ratio and will provide a my client with a stream of highly concentrated traffic. People are more likely to buy a car if they search for "buy a car" rather than "car")
With me so far?
I then take a list of the selection of keywords, usually 20 of them. I chuck them into Google and take the top 3 or 4 websites and run them through SEOMoz's open explorer to look at the link metrics. I fire up excel and for each keyword, I list out the top 3 or 4 websites and place the link metrics and other comparison data from Open Explorer. Sometimes I just use the Moz Rank for comparison.
Here, I find the top 10 keywords which will take the least amount of work to get the website ranking. This will often be for the keyword where the top websites have the least amount of backlinks and link metrics.
Then, I have a perfectly tuned list of keywords which I then have to explain to my client why I can't get them ranking for Porn, because "loads of people search that"
