Hi all

I was wondering if you please could give me a little technical advice on e commerce systems? Please excuse with my rather ropey explanations!

If I was to looking to produce a ‘bolt on’ piece of software that adds functionality to an online e-commerce website, how would one go about this? Also what sort of code would it be developed in? For example, a way of searching items by colour (I know this already exists!).

Another way of saying this would be making a ‘plug in’ that major online retailers could use.

I would expect that they all use custom made e-commerce software so it would be tricky to produce something that would be easily adaptable to their site?

Most pre-built ecommerce platforms already have the ability to add modules and extensions to enhance functionality. However each platform has it's own sets of API's and methods so you're need to target one or more existing systems.

Plenty of folks are making a living out of creating plugins for Magento. If you sling MVC it's easy enough to pick up.
