Since the launch of Macosx Lion yesterday on the App store, has anyone downloaded it and given it a try?

I have heard mixed reviews, especially on the inverted scrolling feature.

Worth upgrading?

P.S, this topic may exist, but I couldn't find it.

Not a Mac user personally but if you are thinking about upgrading and you use Adobe products then beware! Word on the interwebs is they don't work well together.

I've heard about some pretty cool features on Lion such as previewing CSS files in finder and such like, but I'm unable to upgrade as they stopped supporting my olde worlde mac at version 10.5.

Besides, I didn't really like Leopard or snow leopard anyway.

Thanks for the heads up on that.

I liked Snow Leopard, so I probably won't bother upgrading. Im not really looking to have my Imac scrolling like an Ipad, because it is after all, a desktop computer and not a hand-held device.

I've not upgraded yet. Is there any realllllyyyy good reason to? I've heard loads of horror stories. Even on new hardware it runs really slow so how will my old C2D hold out?

I think I'll get it when the iMac's are refreshed.

I've been running a 'hackintosh' as a desktop for a few years, pretty much ever since I got my first Mac laptop in 2006 and fell in love (D'awwww). At the time I was a bit of a hardcore gamer and really didn't want to give up my windows powerhouse gaming rig. Since then I game less and less but I have pushed off the idea of going fully Mac + Bootcamp because the iMac's/Mini's haven't quite been powerful enough.

Now I'm down to the occasional game of TF2 and waiting for the Star Wars MMO. I reckon by the time that comes out I'll be content with playing it on whatever hardware they refresh the iMac's to. It's the only thing holding me back too, I'd love to go all Mac (I've been saving up for when the day comes). Hopefully some day in the next year new iMac's will drop, powerful enough to properly game on along with new Macbook Airs and I'll go into town and drop a disgusting amount of money at the Apple store. I just hope I don't lose my senses, upgrade to 8Gb of RAM instore and bankrupt myself.

Bingo. What Apple fail to grasp is that a trackpad should perform like a mouse not a touchscreen, because it's just an input device, not a combined input device/display. What's right for one is not right for the other, no matter how "consistent" it might be to have them both perform in the same way.

I have the upgrade and I love it. Most of the new features (such as the reverse scroll) can be changed in the system preferences. I haven't encountered many problems with it other than my displays don't go to sleep when connected to my Apple TV. Other than that, it has been smooth running.

Like I said, the setting can be changed. The lines are blurring between mobile and stationary devices. Apple is getting ahead of the curve and trying to be the trendsetting they are so good at. But in any case, there are only a few features that are iOS like, and most of them transfer well to the MacOX platform. It is still very much MacOS. Apple is just playing up the iOS features. It's not like it dominates your experience

How is the Launchpad in practice? I've heard a few reports that it essentially just chucks every app you have in and ends up a horrible mess. That true? Or is it genuinely better than the popout boxes you normally get from the dock?

It does chuck every app you have but honestly what else is it going to do. You can take the time to rearrange it and it can become something really useful. I don't use the feature however, I use a program called Alfred which is tons faster.

SL is perfect for me at the moment but from trying it out in the Apple Store. It doesn't seem worth the upgrade.

Thought I'd add my two pennies worth. I'm writing this after downgrading back to Snow Leopard.

First, even though you can change the inverted scrolling, I actually preferred it and had got used to it.

Now for the horror stories.

Lion is nowhere near the standard I've come to expect from Apple. It takes longer to boot and longer processing in general. I'll break the features down.

New Mail: One of the only pluses, really well designed application and something I'll miss downgrading.
New Safari: New gimmick of going full screen when you could do it anyway, but the new swiping to go back was nice.
Launchpad: Completely useless and a waste of memory.
Mission Control: Doesn't tell you what apps are open in the desktops running along the top, so you have to squint your eyes and scan them to see what is open. I'm embracing back Spaces with open arms, far superior for my uses.

Now for what tipped me over the edge. Being a web developer I use Coda and CS5. Coda worked fine but all the Adobe products are littered with problems, I accept that this isn't solely down to Apple but for people like us, it's unbearable. Photoshop quits randomly and the auto saves don't work on Adobe apps. Dreamweaver had a glitch where if you cmd+tab'd to another application (ie a browser to see changes you've made) and then tab back, all you get is a white screen.

I also do a lot of work locally rather than work on live servers purely for speed purposes. Lion completely screwed my MAMP setup, and this was after I upgraded to the new MAMP 2.0. I had virtual hosts set up and when I entered the local URLs they seemed to pick whatever root folder they fancied and loaded that particular site up.

I went into work this morning only to see my Boss smiling as he pointed to the Lion installation bar on my iMac - I then spent the entire day getting randomly kicked off the Studios wifi, but his Mac didn't experience this problem.

So there you go, for me, I'm not touching Lion with a barge pole until they fix everything and hopefully get spaces back as an option (wishful thinking)
