I have the opportunity to purchase an LG Flatron 22" widescreen monitor at a good price. The native resolution appears to be 1920x1080.

My current graphics card only handles resolutions up to 1280x1024 and 1280x800 for widescreen. I intend to upgrade my system completely in a year or so, but in the meantime would the monitor function ok at the lower resolution or would the picture be poor?

How do you know that your graphics card is limited to those resolutions?

Most cards made in the last 10 years will output pretty much any resolution you want them to. Are you sure you aren't just looking at the screen resolution options in Windows?

Your graphics card is probably only showing up modes that your current monitor can handle. I'd be very surprised if it couldn't do 1920x1080. Try searching google for the graphic card make/model and see if you can get specifications or a user manual which will tell you what modes it supports.

Thank you for you replies, my card is a Nvidia Geforce 7600GT, you are right, I am only looking at the desktop properties. I do not know what resolutions my card can handle, but on the desktop, if the resolution shown is the maximum my present monitor is capable of then conecting the new monitor would allow desktop to show more resolutions?

You'll be fine. 7600GT's support upto 2560x1600 on Dual link DVI.

One thing to watch out for is 1920*1080 will be quite a fine pixel pitch for 22", so make sure you test designs on other monitors too, otherwise you'll end up designing elements by eye that work out to be a bit large on other screens.

I guess the only way to see if it works is by giving it a try. Try it now and give your results later. I wish you luck! :santa_cheesy:

^ This.

Most 1920x1080 res monitors are 23" or larger.
Most 22" monitors are 1650x1050 iirc.

^True. You'll need to get a feel for it. You'll still have the other monitor to test on though. You'll find the space is amazing. And I recently changed from 1920x1200 to 2560x1440 which is fantastic.

If you work more than 2-3 hours per day on your computer - the perfect monitor size for you will be 24". Samsung has good monitors, i'm not impressed by LG in this array.
