I am opening new site related to stock photography. The only payment gateway I'm using is PayPal. I intend to focus pretty much to selling here in Japan.
The problem is that many Japanese users have never heard of such thing as Paypal. One customer went to largest Japanese bank Mizuho and asked them "what is Paypal" the bank's employee shook her head and said she has never heard of such thing.
I made a test. I asked my wife to sign up to my shop and buy a photo with her credit card. First, she had to figure out to use the site, and register into the site, receive confirmation email, click the activation link and login to the site. Then she added a photo to the shopping cart, and thought the process was over, just to learn that she has to register to Paypal. After fifteen minutes, she was finally ready to BUY the picture.
I wish there was easy way for us newcomers to reduce these steps and the threshold of becoming a buyer.
Would you have any ideas how to help the situation?
I think to add Japanese version of Paypal explanation to the site would be helpful, but then I think Paypal doesn't like if I just copy the text and paste their content.
So I'm hiring a translator to translate the thing to Japanese and explain with his own words what Paypal is, that should be OK..
If you have any insight on these matters, I'd be glad to know.

is there nothing on their .jp site? http://www.paypal.jp/jp
I can't imagine why they'd be upset about you copying/pasting certain information from their site onto yours to explain their service. After all they will be making money from anything sold on your site.
