Ok not hardware and fully understand if this thread needs to be moved but it regarding os installation and thought this was a bit more relevant.....
My situation...
doing a system restore on a laptop, vista 38 bit. Totally fresh. Instead of using the disk supplied (i thought I did but on installation it told me it was an 'e-machile' and i remembered it was from my dad's desktop. Installed it on laptop and just done the updates and all seems fine. But shouldn't it be highlighted somewhere at microsoft that i've installed the os on the wrong computer? or can i get updates etc? Surely if i can install on my laptop then so could anyone else, and not bothering purchasing a 'genuine' os? I'm not too worried if it did flag something up as i do have a genuine copy for the machine somewhere and im sure there will be licensing proof attached somewhere or in some paperwork when i purchased the laptop. But it does seem to be working ok so far?
Will i encounter problems installing genuine vista os on my laptop, even though it was and still installed on my dads desktop? Any advice would be appreciated
Kind regards
Alan

Depends which licence key you used, not which media. AFAIK.

This. The media you used was probably still OEM, which means the licence key should work but as you've already noticed, it's got all the drivers and customizations for the machine it was intended for. Once you've confirmed that it activates ok, hit up the manufacturer's website and grab the latest drivers - since you're using the wrong disk, they won't have been included.

Still had the driver disks for my machine so no probs there, installed and all seems ok so far. Done full updates for the system, around 60 odd i think, and all looks ok too! Funnily enough it didn't at any time ask for a license or product key. Strange..
