Hello,

finished a website for my mums jewelry business and now I need to add a basket / payment option. We are going to use paypal but im wondering can I use a shopping cart with them as well?

Of course others exist but will, probably, take longer to integrate. With ebay (owner of paypal) just buying Magento who knows what the future will be. I'd expect some cross pollenation and the paypal shopping experience growing some.

I agree with zeds. You can use Magento. It is really good and powerfull CMS. I think you will get a lot opportunities in eCommerce
