To make a site like Facebook you would need quite a lot of knowledge and experience with PHP or another server-side language.

You could install elgg http://elgg.org/ unless you're really looking to learn to build from scratch

Elgg, Joomla + JomSocial may do the job. There are also plenty number of Facebook Clones you may find on the net.

Not to sure about learning the exact fundamentals of 'creating a social media site' from scratch, i'm sure you are well aware of the level of coding required. However i advise checking out PHP fox we've used it for a few clients, as in the name it's developed in PHP but runs on modules, thus you need to get your head around them prior any 'free for all development'

It is however a very extensive platform and they are soon to be launching version three i believe very shortly. Pretty resource hungry so a dedicated server is probably best but as you can imagine can save you a hell of lot of money and time. Being modular can quite literally customise it all from the ground up, but finding developers specifically with PHP Fox knowledge is a bit of a challenge. I have the contacts of a few reliable sources so if you need more info just give me a shout : )
