Hi All,

Wondering if anyone else is having issues with Firefox 4 and the new flash update?

When using websites such as youtube and vevo. my browser freezes on flash actions.

I have to close to disable the flash in order to be able to it again :(

For Youtube, you can use the HTML5 <video> version instead.

I have this problem quite a lot.

I get that the plug-in container has failed, and I need to reload the page, or it just completely locks up. The only way to then get it back is to 'End Process Tree' in task manager for the plug in container.

Shame because FF has been a great tool for me when doing websites that I don't want to switch.

No no I was angling after your reasons for thinking that Chrome was a whole lot better, seeing as they seem neck and neck to me. Mind you, seems after reading the complaints on this thread, I'm one of the lucky ones who Firefox actually works for :D so perhaps that answers my question.

On OS X, Firefox is unacceptably slow at loading (application). I can load Photoshop CS5 faster than Firefox. Safari is unbeatably fast, with Chrome not too far behind. Perhaps the story is different on PCs?

Out-of-the-box, Chrome is more efficient for my workflow. I hate fiddling with settings and Firefox has some fairly irritating ones. Automatically going to the top Google result for searches? A custom Firefox Google homepage? A non-removable search bar, right next to the address bar which does exactly the same thing?

For me, Firefox is dead (or dying) - and I personally know very few people still using it. Even my parents moved from Firefox to Chrome - for me, that's confirmation of a more user-friendly, successful app.

Chrome has 'Developer Tools', just like Safari - essentially pre-installed Firebug. So, in that respect, Chrome is made for Developers, Firefox is far from it.

I just tried on my PC for the record and it came out something like (roughly) 5 seconds for Chrome and 3-4 for Firefox. But like you say, that's on a PC (an old one at that, I'm steam powered at the moment). It's a bit strange that your Mac will load Photoshop faster, that doesn't sound right....have you got a load of cache in Firefox loading or something like that?

Fair do's.

Ah, but IE has "inbuilt developer tools" (which are sort of ok-ish), but that certainly doesn't mean it's built for developers. On the other hand, I find using a combination of Firefox's tools and IE's tools gives extra clues (especially JS), so perhaps it's a good idea to include Chrome in that as well.

So what's happened with you and Safari then Andy, as a Mac user? Do you not like it?

As you may have seen from my recent status, I had quite a traumatic experience with Windows yesterday - so I won't be rushing to test! Nope, no sizable cache - in-fact it's a fresh install of Firefox 3.6 after finding out Firefox 4 doesn't actually work with all plugins yet. It's always been the slowest to load, on all 3 of my Macs. When I refer to 'slow' - on this iMac, it's about 1 or 2 seconds - but relative to Photoshop, it should be considerably quicker.

It's lovely, the only thing I can't deal with is the fact that typing in the address bar doesn't do a Google search. I never visit 'Google.com', I always use the address bar. Typing 'Web design forum' into Safari tries to literally go to; web%20design%20forum.com. It's a shame, because the browser is beautifully lightweight and blindingly fast - we're talking under a second to load here. For the search reason, I cannot deal with it! I know - I'm picky - but I'm a geek, so it's allowed! ;)

I don't know if you're familiar with OS X but, in general, pressing the equivalent to Windows' 'Close' button simply hides the application window. Therefore, once you've opened an application once on a Mac, the next time you click it, it's instantaneous as it's simply showing a new window (or showing the application UI for things like Photoshop). When I talk about 'speeds' above, I'm referring to a full launch of an app which has been Quit.

For me I tend to work between the two of them, FF mostly being my main browser tho. FF4 is very customizable and very easy to use, plus there are more and better add ons then Chrome. I've tried to use Chrome exclusively before but even a simple screenshot add on never worked right and I hate having to use an app for everything. Chrome, much like most Google products is fast but its very non user friendly.

I agree, for a designer to use FF right out of the box is a stretch, you really do need to spend the time and customize it the way you want, get the add ons you need. But I don't think its dying. I still know plenty of people who use it. Its funny, most of the designers I know use FF and most of the developers I know use Chrome.

BTW, you have some pretty hip parents. Mine still use AOL!
