Hey everyone,

I'm looking at developing my first 'shop' website and I've got no experience with this. I've heard a lot of good things about Magento and I believe it's free but I've no idea how to handle payments (possibly payments from other countries too). Can anyone shed any light on this? The project will only be small - around 100 products. I've got years of experience with HTML/CSS and various Content Management Systems but this stuff is all new to me.

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it :)

You can also try OpenCart, it's a bit easier on the brain than Magento.
Also my clients seem to prefer the admin area of OpenCart.

Magento is hands-down the most feature-rich platform but there's a bit of a learning curve to developing for it. If you sling Zend Framework you'll be fine but you still need to learn some quirks, like the XML-based templating system.

I've just downloaded and installed Opencart. I like what I see with the admin area - very easy to use. I have a couple of questions:

- templates

how easy is it to add a custom design to the shop?

- payment

currently it just lets me use "cash". What is the recommended payment provider I could use with Opencart? The site will be German so typically selling to German people but obviously the option for other countries should be there. I'm waiting for the client to tell me if there are any specific payment types they want but I'm guessing the typical cards would be enough. It's not going to be a big shop (around 100 products, maximum) so I'm not sure which route to go down with this. Am I right to think that it can be linked to PayPal and people even without a PayPal account can pay with a card of their choice? Sorry if this is a strange question but it's new to me.

Thanks!

Templates - Pretty easy thank god. Just a case of creating a design and templating it up. Have a read through this article to get an idea.

Payments - Under modules settings their should be a section for payment modules, in here you can configure different payment methods.

If you are used to Joomla, look at Virtuemart. Do watch out - it has limits that are had to het arround, pay attention to postage and payment gateways, and you will need to now if you are offering bundles or grouped products (another limitation)

Magento is pretty easy when you get your head into it

+1 for magento.. there are now plenty of hosting companies that are providing magento specific support included in their hosting fees. So no reason not to dip your toe in the water.

Hands up, it has to be Magento, even without mentioning that a healthy throng of extensions are being continuously developed and made available (mostly for free) to add functionality to your e-commerce site-- well, when you get to that part, anyway. =)

I definitely agree with the Magento platform for your shopping cart, and you can find a lot of Magento themes online. Here is a site I found when I googles Magento themes

Magento Themes

Magento is the Hottest thing in the e-commerce world at the moment. The admin is quite powerful and lots of things can be customized easily. You can download and try magento themes and extensions that come for free.

Anyways, good luck
