It is a well known fact that one way links are better, but there is also not doubt that although link exchange is not quite as effective it will still have a big impact on your SERPs position and only in a good way (as long as your not linking to banned websites).

It is not true that reciprocal linking has little value. Google does indeed treat reciprocal linking with some weight, if, and only if, the sites are content related.
I.e. a plumber who has a links page and links to the local pub and local farmer will carry no weight at all, however, two solicitors linking to each other is favourable.

That's a common misconception, all link within reason carry weight.
For example, I have a site about autism (PR 5) linking to us (a web company) and that knocks us up several places in the serps.

That's interesting I didn't know that! Its funny actually that when I'm tracking key words Bing & Yahoo, 90% of the time give exactly the same result and position for my keywords and the position compared to Google is much higher. For example for the term independent mortgage advice on Bing we are 19th but in Google we are 44th and it seems from the tracking that I have done that with Bing and Yahoo you can get to the top end very quickly where as Google takes a little longer to reach the same heights but usually does get to the same position within a few weeks.
Anyone else noticed this trend with the sites?
