We recently outsourced the development on a Magento driven site as we were told it was the best and we also needed a platform that could handle multiple addresses easily. Anyway, 6 months down the road, the site works finally and we have had to put the site on a dedicated hosting solution and it seems fine.

Anyone have experience? How easy would it to be to learn this ourselves? Anyone offering developer training?

thanks

PS, are there any serious contenders to Magento that you know of? something which isn't' soooooo processor hungry?

Magento's performance relies quite a bit on server optimization. If the site has a level of traffic that would normally require a dedicated box, then hosting Magento on a dedicated box isn't such a big deal.

As far as putting it on shared hosting goes, you want a provider who doesn't oversell resources and knows how to optimize for Magento - NuBlue are fantastic for that.

Developing Magento - your best bet is to get stuck into learning the Zend Framework, as that's what Magento is built on. There are plenty of tutorials and you can get certification at Zend.com.

Contenders? Not really. There's nothing out there that offers the same blend of features, extensibility and well-written codebase (because believe me, it's very well-architected - the performance issues come from complexity, not poor code) available for free, and even some commercial solutions don't come close.

Magento is not so much processor hungry as the hosting just needs to be setup correctly.

Unless you are getting insane levels of traffic Magneto does not have to have a dedicated server. As the above posted noted you just need a host who understands Magneto and has optimised their servers for this application.

We have two shared magneto hostign offerings at £14.50pm and £24.99pm. One offers sub 0.7 second page load times and the other offers sub 0.2 second page load times with a much faster backend experience (where the real processor stuff happens).

there is even a benchmarking site which gives you insight into how Magento hosts compare to each other to find the right price / performance option you need.

http://magebenchmark...y=rps&sort=DESC

As far as we can tell Magento is the only real player on the scene and I would urge everyone with an interest in e-commerce to start figuring out how it all works.

I will PM you the name of a company offering magento training.

hope this helps

You do need decent hosting. Anyone with decent PHP/SQL/CSS/HTML/JS skills will find developing with Magento pretty routine

I looked into it a while ago and found lots of comments that it was a steep learning curve to theme if you don't have previous experience. If you are new to ecommerce design then there are lighter options, which is why I went with Prestashop.

Hi Sarah,

there are many carts which are easier to get into.. i would argue that it is worth taking the time to learn magento.. it will pay off in the long run

Is there a free user/developer guide for Magento or just the PDF that you have to buy on the Magento site.

Thanks

There's a lot of documentation in the Resources section on their site - http://www.magentocommerce.com/

They also offer training - http://www.magentoco...rvices/training - and full product support options - http://www.magentoco...upport/overview
