There does seem an increase in spam by people just wanting to get to the magic number and quite openly admitting it by some of them.

Do they get an error message when they submit a link? If that message said use example.com instead it might be the end of the problem and a spam free world.

Now how to stop people from bringing up dead threads... :diablo:

I know a few other forums that automatically lock the threads after a certain time period so only Admin or Mods can post in them. I think the criteria for it is something link 60 days old and no posts for the past 10 days.

If you look at it from a usability stand point, even though logically it makes sense there is a clear issue were people don't understand that they can put example.com instead. The decision is whether the end justifies the means.

Indeed, i'm going to add the post restrictions for links and access to certain forums within the welcome PM and also advise that they can still post "yourwebsite.com" as an alternative.

Good idea. It just seems like the perfect balance needs to be found. Something that's far easier to type than to achieve!

I think that making it more difficult for spammers is a great idea.

Hey I do realise I only post links here for jobs so technically I am a bit of a spammer but if you want a script that checks the spammers databases then check this http : // www . stopforumspam . com /
This does most of them and is easily added on. Plus you then wont have to check manually.

I heard that link submission is not good technique for getting backlinks...Because Most of the sites are taking a long time for accepting the links..And some sites are sending the mail like your link has been accepted but while check we cant find our link in their site. How our links are getting traffic by the those sites. How do we find the links which can accept the link and link back to us.

Its really a very good approach to stop the spammers hitting the site. The forum is for learning and sharing our knowledge only not for any other spamming activities.

I'd advise that posts which are 90 days old stop receiving comments and close comments all together, this would really help with spam

It's interesting to see how this will pan out with the 25 post limit removed. I don't think it's the best idea for controlling spam, anyway. Larger forums instead have more aggressive moderation, which of course requires a lot of moderators, but proves to be extremely effective every single time.

You're right, moderation all the way.

well....

Spam in blogs (also called simply blog spam or comment spam) is a form of spamdexing. (Note that blogspam has another, more common meaning, namely the post of a blogger who creates no-value-added posts

I wonder if the makers of the compressed meat-like substance wish they had now called their product something else?

I am happy with the 25+ restriction.

I am here to contribute to the community and build a good reputation with it's members.

I am not a moderator but I will act like one, in the respect of reporting spam and junk posts. This allows us to keep a nice and clean forum.

You mean Captcha - it's next to useless. Re-Captcha is better

Yes, but I guess they're beyond that now. Re-Captcha then?

The restrictions are fair enough.

Some clients who decided to include a forum on their website face similar problems although the truth of the matter is that you can't eliminate this problem, just keeping it within acceptable levels.

Legit users don't have spammy usernames and lie about where they're from. You're not in Sydney, you're from the Philippines and you're a spammer.
