Are you using article marketing? Submit articles related to article directories. Though people advice to use article submitter, I manually submit only to few directories. It improves your web site backlinks.

Do you have a backlink strategy in place and are you posting on forums and blogs? If not I would suggest doing that. Have you done keyword research and if so are you using that text in the anchor text of those links?

Together with the "Article Marketing" mentioned above I would also look into "Social Bookmarking" at the top sites and also RSS Submissions as well. Do that and you should start to see an improvment in your results.

Do you add fresh and updated content on a regular basis? If not you should start to do that as well as its very important to have new content that the Search Engines can chew on.

Updating meta tags (apart from the Title tag) will do little to be honest. Google is focusing more and more on quality content, that it's users find useful (no quality results from Google to it's users, no Google).

If you give us a link to your web site, may be it will be more useful to comment.

Optimizing a site and getting traffic/ranking is entirely different from making sales from that visitors. So if you say negative results means where exactly?

Er, SEO isn't all about organic results at all. Organic rankings in SERPs are just one area of SEO. :)
