Having recently got caught out letting Google log a site that was under development I'd like to know what the best way to set up a development server is? I added a robots.txt, but either it was too late or didn't work. Is it better to have a completely separate webspace for dev work?

I use XAMPP ... it's easy to install and get up and running. I develop my Wordpress sites on my own machine before I upload them.

I need to let clients see the site under development online. So WAMP and MAMP aren't really what I mean.

Have you got your own hosting? You could set up a sub domain and do your work in there? So the customer can do to the sub domain and see it being developed?

I have to do this daily at work.

What I did was buy a cheap testing .co.uk domain (with our company name in it) and host sites there E.g. domain.coc.uk/site1, domain.co.uk/site2 etc.

Don't link to the url at all.

To be safe:

  • Add a robots.txt to block search engines
  • Password protect the root directory E.g. site.co.uk and password protect each subsequent folder
I used to add test sites manually to our server, but thought it looked a more professional having companyname-websites.co.uk to send to clients :)

Wow, good tips! I'll remember this one. Is there anything else that anyone could add? It would greatly appreciated!
